It has become almost a cliché in western thought that the moment of sexual climax is one where the person is not lost in daydreams but rather is fully present.

So, Nydahl might use this language, but to place it in context, this is a guy who became so lost in his own imagination that he forgot to open his parachute and nearly died as a result.
It would seem fairly obvious that he was anything but present - this is being lost in thought, not going beyond mind to discover the "true nature of reality".

Both. The point here is that the teachings are designed to go "beyond mind". So for any student of Nydahl, one has to decide whether the opinions he voices are based on conceptual and discursive thought, or whether they are beyond concepts.

In other words, do such thoughts have a "conditioning" effect or not? They certainly seem to have a conditioning effect on those who take him seriously. Whether he takes himself seriously or not is a matter of conjecture, but the fact that he seems to have repeated the same ideas, on stage, during "dharma" lectures, suggests that he is "caught up" in them - just as he got caught up in his own imaginings during the famous parachute accident.

Yes, I heard him talk about his accident... it was quite strange. I do not know the genuine Guroyoga stuff, but the modified guided Meditations they do in the centers are not supposed to cultivate 'awareness' in any way. They even admit, mindfullness practices like Zen, Vipassana or Dzogchen are to boring :D
