The early evolution and history of Bengal Vaishnavism:
https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.68279/page/n169/mode/2up"... There was, however, no jealousy on the part of the Gopas towards Krsna for sporting with their wives, because through the Maya of Krsna, each had an apparent wife with him"..."
It seems so goddamn twisted and unnecessarily convoluted by any standard... Why does god need to fuck around with other people's wives but make them believe/trick them that he is not? I mean, hands down, Gaudiya Vaishnavism has to be one of the most made-up and all-over-the-place ideologies/myths/rituals/beliefs.
And more on the evolution of puranic Vaishnavism:
https://ijcrt.org/papers/IJCRT2108269.pdf"The Savaras, being influenced by the acculturation of the Aryans, began to worship the Sthanu-Murti19 (a log of God) in lieu of tree-worship. The Blue God in the form of Nilamadhab became known as the Purusottam-Vishnu.20 Legend has it that Jara Savar salvaged the mortal remains of Lord Krishna from the ocean. There is also a legend referring to Savari–Narayan. The Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, Narada Purana, and Padma Purana are replete with the above accounts.21 The Savaras who worshipped the log of wood named this object Jaganta or Jaganallo. It is believed that the non-Aryan Savaras who worshipped the wooden deity Jaganta in the course of time accepted Purusottam-Vishnu as their god and began to worship Him. At present, Lord Jagannath generates a matrix of inter-group relations. The syncretism is exemplary and can be perceived in multifarious ways, whether in philosophy or rituals."
An excellent article on the emergence and unique nature of Kirtan as a Bengali phenomenon—invented essentially in its current expression in the last 400-500 years:
https://www.muktoarts.org/more-publication/a-glimpse-of-evolution-of-bengali-kirtan-in-post-chaitanya-period/ Interesting to note that the "yuga dharma" was not mentioned or even heard of in most of the essential "kali yuga" scriptures like Bhagavatam and Gita. Literally crickets about the so-called maha mantra, Radha goddess, and process of congregational chanting.
Educate yourself, but don't bullshit yourself. Do it if it makes you happy, but know 100% that it's not some "miracle" and "transcendental" thing. It's very human, very material, and very much a result of the sociological evolution of religion, casteism, mythology, and ideology. And no, you don't need Butler to enjoy it or appreciate it.
Research, read, learn, Run.
