I wasn't a fan either until I picked up her book, and now I'm halfway through. If it wasn't laundry day I'd still be reading it right now at 2:30 a.m. I highly recommend it. Her explanation of Disconnection was the best I've read

Her book Troublemaker goes into her experiences in Scientology in depth. For example, at a very young age she was allowed to sign up for the sea org and separated from her mother. It is witty but also sad. I highly recommend it, and I wasn't a Remini fan before buying it.

Chabad used me as a pawn and still do it for sympathy. It's more common than not, I'd think.

Some places videotape sessions for interns to go over their sessions with their advisors. This is practiced by my local UC school. Other new schools use it to have evidence to the accreditation board. In these cases after time the tapes are properly destroyed.

Without a doubt. Members of Chabad dress in a similar fashion as Hasidic Jews. Our home would not have photographs or paintings. I remember going to a Hebrew lesson and the teenage boy teaching me looked longing out the window at the lot where some kids were playing baseball. When I got home I told my mother something wasn't quite right with this group. I was not able to put my finger on it

Thank you so much for your website and forums. As a child I spent a year in a cult (Chabad). This forum has been a great benefit.

I'm in a similar situation and just now able to even consider moving out. You are a strong woman and I admire you. Just remember that what you hear out of your children is not their voice but their father's. Until they are able to leave him and realize what he is doing they will be under his sphere of influence. Just let them know the lines of communication are open when they are re

My old Catholic Bible had that scripture marked off as "possibly" being inspired. It stated in the footnote that it was not in many of the early non-English Bibles.

When my mother and I were in a cult, my grandparents used several of the teqniques listed on RRoss's link above. It probably eventually got us out because we were not threatened by them. Since all talk was limited to family updates we were allowed to keep that connection. Even when we were discouraged not to talk to the them or write them we knew the world outside still existed for us. I can

My grandmother walked with a limp from polio. Although I grew up when most vaccinations were given, I suffer from a heart murmur due to asymptomatic strep that was caught by my dentist who noticed my discolored throat (I didn't have any other symptoms at that time). Many of the parents that are against vaccinations don't know what these epidemics are like, as they were born after th

Quotedsm So I made some remarks about the politcal relationships of twelve-tribes cults that offended those who want to keep the idea out there that JC is nothing but an extension of McKay's personality quirks. Very strange, frankly. If a cult is dangerous it is dangerous. This thread is not about a weak link (at best) between the twelve-tribes cults and the JCs. This thread is a

QuotezeuszorQuotedsmZeuszor, thank you for the detailed notes about your involvement with the Twelve Tribes, which apparently is not McKay-related at all. May I ask what motivates you to so openly go into other cults, whether or not they are related to the cult you exitted? Professional cult investigators generally avoid membership. If they go into a cult to observe it on behalf of a clie

QuotezeuszorThat's it. I'm out for a while, guys. It is unfortunate that there are so many self interests involved in the whole JC issue. There are very few people (that are involved in the JC debate) that I can have a meaningful dialogue with. Everyone appears to have an individual axe to grind. There is so much preoccupation in scoring points and expressing moral superiority, that

QuoterichardmgreenYears ago, when Chabad got involved to get me out of Ben Yishai, Shea told me that his father, JJ Hecht, used to get up literally on a soap box and cry out to Jews to not listen to the Christian missionaries. It seems to me that we have to do this in regards to Chabad too. Yeap. When I was involved in a Chabad childhood outreach group they would tell us kids that not only wer

This is a real public service. I had a fellow student who was assigned a report on TM in one of her college classes. I sent her here right away and she was amazed at what she read. To me, that's the perfect example of the type of education this website offers. Thanks Rick for all the hard work.

I cannot speak for the groups which you write about, but I live near an area where Chabad has settled. If you are an orthodox or conservative jew they will allow you into their homes to learn the Chabad teachings until you are ready to be accepted in their congregation. They do not charge a penny, they only expect you to join the cult once you have finished the "training", which can ru

QuoterichardmgreenDying in the name of god (in Judaism it's called "dying al kiddush hashem") is a belief that many religions have. I wouldn't be so quick to die. My dad used to say, "Once you're dead, you're going to be dead a long, long time!" Like forever, I believe. The booklet, The Story of Chanukah, published by Chabad's Kehot publshing s

QuoterrmoderatorWhat cult were you in and how did it affect your life? How did you cope after leaving and what advice or insights do you have for others? Chabad. I was a minor when I was in for a year or two. Its a blur. I don't know how it effected my life for sure because it was when I was at the age of discovering myself (early teen). By nature, there are so many other factors. I

When I log on every couple of weeks, the majority of my read private messages are marked as "unread". There is no option to mark them as "read" which makes it hard to determine when I actually have a new Private Message. I do not need a fix for this, but did want to make you aware of the problem.
