My husband strode into the room, eyes shining, and spoke to me in a rasping voice I'd never heard before; a husky, throaty voice redolent of Gauloises, a twinkle in the eye, a promise of passion, but what he said was: 'I have been shouting, I have been giving, I am spent.'
My eyes wandered down to the foreign object hanging around his neck. I could hardly bear to look at the wrinkled hessian bag dangling from a cord. I was informed it was a pouch filled with 'special' herbs.
I wondered whether he'd been smoking its contents. I lowered my gaze to his feet. Please don't let him be wearing Jesus sandals. A breath of relief swept through me when I saw his familiar trainers.
Yes, this was the man I'd lived with for 15 years, albeit in some sort of strange alien form.
He even smiled at me - something he hadn't done for months. I found myself wondering whether he had discovered the key to solving the problems of our increasingly troubled marriage - which, until six months earlier, had felt warm, happy and secure.
