Mid-Prairie decides to pass on Shiloh space
By James Jennings 9 hrs ago
The Mid-Prairie school district will not be moving programs to the main building on the Shiloh property.
Superintendent Mark Schneider said Monday that, after looking over renovation cost estimates, the district’s Facilities Committee decided putting money into the building would not be the best use of district money.
“We got numbers from (contractor) Carl A. Nelson last week,” Schneider said. “They said it would cost the district about $1.5 million to renovate and remodel the areas of the building we were looking at for preschool and other uses.”
He said that the facilities committee reviewed the estimates at a meeting last week.
“It was a short discussion,” Schneider said. “It was agreed that $1.5 million was too much money to spend on a building we wouldn’t even own. It would not be the best use of the district’s money or the taxpayers’ money.”
Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh updated the city council Monday of the school district’s decision.
“It takes them out of the mix,” Schlabaugh said. “It’s going to be a tough sell for me to make any proposal to the council without the school district. On the building, I don’t’ have a good plan right now.”
