Wow. I was just thinking about this when reading an article about Narcissim in the Pulpit. In it it said that this person exaggerates to elevate their own sense of importance.
I remember gathering in a room at the yellow house (I think with). Mike, Judy Johnston and several others they were debriefing the day. Judy said something like we had counters and this is the number they came up with and Mike began saying that had to be wrong they must not have taken this or that into account. To her credit Judy just repeated well these are the hard numbers.
I felt uneasy but left after that. I didn't write down what she had said and then checked it with what was announced later.

I wanted to engage posters in a discussion about exaggeration at TP. Did anyone notice this habit/pattern? I did on a number of occassions when pastors gave reports of events or ministries at which I had been in attendance. I cannot give lots of specific examples, as I did not record them and did not consider them worth remembering at the time, but I do recall it happening consistently.
My most poignant recollection is related to Summer Jubilee (aka Church in the Park). One year, immediately after the event, I remember hearing how many people had attended, a number submitted by those who had been keeping track. Then, at a Fan the Flame (or some meeting before the next Sunday), I heard a number that was significantly larger than this original number. Then on Sunday, the number had increased even more--quite a bit more--and was posted in the bulletin. I was irked by this inflated number. Why make stuff up? Who were we trying to impress and why?
Also, accounts of events always seemed to be hyped up and beefed up compared to what I had experienced or seen when I was there. Anyone else notice this along the way? It always bothered me, but it was just another thing I put aside, not wanting to make waves.
Do you think it's possible that this unchecked habit of exaggeration might have been a factor in developing a comfort level with more significant lies?
