The Fallacy of 'Core Shamanism'

From the New Age Frauds and Plastic Shamans forum:

Much of this originated from the malign influence of Carlos Castaneda. Castaneda did not do sweat lodges. But his story about using jimson weed/datura stramonium led some trusting souls to use the stuff--which is both psychoactive and toxic.

Discussions about Castaneda etc.

James Arthur Ray - Victim's Family Calls for Arrest, Holocaust
Posted by: The Anticult ()

James Ray has a new PR company, and thus a new PR approach.
And again he is trying to put the blame for the so-called sweat lodge on whoever allegedly built and designed it.
Of course that is sheer nonsense. Anyone can see when you cover an extremely over-heated tent with a close to air-tight seal, very damaging things are going to happen to dehydrated humans inside.
That is not going to wash with anyone.

But notice how outrageous that is, even James Ray's followers can't swallow that. Blaming others?
Isn't James Ray supposed to be the master of New Thought [www.skepdic.com] and thus brings everything into his world by his thoughts? (The Secret is New Thought).
According to The Secret, James Ray literally created all of this.
The Secret, which is what made James Ray famous, was also debunked years ago in these very threads in great detail.
When people start believing things like New Thought, (which is extreme and absolute Mind over Matter belief system), then people are going to get hurt and even die.

The Secret (a movie) [forum.culteducation.com]

And Oprah has yet to take any responsibility for promoting those ideas with NO SKEPTICS ALLOWED on her TV show to point out where The Secret is false, damaging, and dangerous. Equal time should have been given to some professional thinkers and skeptics who can explain where it all goes wrong.
(but that doesn't sell books and DVD's).

And of course, James Ray like Byron Katie feels the need to being the Holocaust into his New Thought belief system, just like Byron Katie.

QUOTE:
In that interview, Ray defended "The Secret" against critics who asked if the victims of 9/11 or the Holocaust are to blame for simply thinking incorrectly.
"I know people of the Jewish faith and heritage who don't necessarily believe the Holocaust was bad," Ray said. "Now that might be shocking to you but I have people on record who have said, hey there's a lot of good things that came out of that, a lot of lessons, a lot of opportunities for the world. "

Re: James Arthur Ray - LGAT seminar regulation
Posted by: The Anticult ()

Even a Republican is calling for regulation of these dangerous LGAT seminars.

You have to have a license to sell a pre-cooked hot dog, but not to split people's minds wide open at a multi-day seminar costing 10's of thousands of dollars?
They deliberately trigger their traumas and PTSD, using forms of "group therapy", while just not calling it therapy to avoid regulation. They put people's lives at risk, physically, emotionally, financially, psychologically.

Why is it that the LGAT seminar industry is totally unregulated? It needs to be regulated.
Including the labor violations in getting their people to work for free, and to PAY to work at the for-profit seminar. That ain't even legal, yet they seem to get away with it?

Now of course, the LGAT seminar Gurus would then immediately
1) move their LGAT seminars to Mexico
2) move into religious seminars, to avoid regulation that way.

But these LGAT seminars have gone too far for too long. How much worse does it have to get?
Hopefully some legislators will grab onto this issue.

Consumer Reports should do an in-depth study of these LGAT seminars, that would blow the roof off them.

"New York state has many laws to protect its citizens that seek various services from entrepreneurs. Those providing everyday services such as barbers and nail specialists have to be licensed. Of course, medical practitioners and drug and alcohol counselors must have certain credentials and academic degrees, and must pass professional muster. Physical and occupational therapists are regulated by the New York State Department of Education. Where were the authorities in Arizona while some self-proclaimed expert literally baked three people to death?

As a Republican I am not a champion of big government and regulation beyond the grave. However, someone in authority has to look at the type of program that was offered in Arizona to ensure that innocent and trusting people are not carelessly exposed to death. We have strict regulations covering everything from day care to day camps to school buses. Shouldn’t people who are trying to improve their lives through a motivational weekend be guaranteed that their safety is not in jeopardy?

James Arthur Ray - not a sweat lodge, a Hot House torture test
Posted by: The Anticult ()
Date: October 30, 2009 05:39AM

Its entirely understandable that native americans are upset by the James Ray tragedy.
[www.sedona.biz] QUOTE: "This was completely upside-down from what was intended"

Its too bad the message can't get out to the public, that what James Ray was doing was not in any way a "sweat lodge".
James Ray was using the "idea" of a sweat-lodge as a cover, to run his own agenda.
It appears some native americans are saying that everything is upside down in the James Ray incident. That is because clearly this was not meant to be a sweatlodge, but something else entirely.
James Ray and others were just using the appearance of sacred traditions, to shield their real agenda, which is one of deep group influence and indoctrination.

The James Ray incident was not a "sweat lodge", that is really just false labelling.
What was it really?
Its really just a type of extreme "hot house" used in group persuasion.
A type of torture test, pushing people to the edge of death, to create a deep group bonding experience, and many other things. Perhaps even trying to manufacture a near-death experience, or more realistically, to create euphoria through oxygen deprivation to the human brain.

Is this the first hot house used in group influence and persuasion to put people into an extreme physical environment? Of course not, they have been used for decades by many different people, in many different ways.
Of course, the Hot House is also used in actual torture to "soften people up". And in recent years of course, that would not be called "torture" anymore, but perhaps Heat-Boarding, or heat-tolerance, or whatever new label they could give it.

James Ray just used the word "sweat lodge" as a type of bait and switch, to get people to go into his Hot House, aka torture test, or brainwashing tent, or whatever you want to call it.
Its not a sweatlodge, it has nothing to do with the native american sweatlodge, other than the fact they are using the term "sweat lodge" in terms of advertising and misdirection.

Also, the plastic covered crude hut wasn't a "lodge", and due to the severe dehydration, one doubts people could even "sweat", and so the body overheats, which can result in immediate death and organ damage.
So it was not a sweat-lodge in any way one can look at it.

There is a comment below, the main point being said very clearly.
This James Ray hot-house torture test was not a sweat lodge, and of course was never was meant to be one.

Which year did the Mankind Project LGAT start using the fake sweat lodge? They say they have been doing them for 24 years.
So its very possible and likely that James Ray just copied the MKP methods, then modified them himself.

Is there actual proof that the Mankind Project also uses plastic or other non-breathable material on their fake sweat lodge?
If so, that shows a modification they designed to create oxygen deprivation.

New Warrior Training Adventure® is trying to do some serious PR [mankindproject.org] to distance themselves from James Ray, like everyone else in the New Age and LGAT business.

The Mankind Project sounds extremely dangerous, just from their catchphrase alone.

Mankind Project QUOTE: "Are you ready to learn more about who you are in 48 hours than you’ve probably learned in the last 20 years?"

The MKP catchphrase is an extremely serious warning sign, they say right there they can and will break you down in 48 hrs, more than 20 years of life experience.
The MKP catch-phrase also has the embedded suggestive PRESUPPOSITION "are you ready" in the form of a question, which is a deliberate verbal technique.
The question is permissive influence, they ask you the leading questions, your brain provides the answer they are leading you to, so you think its your idea. (they repeat that hundreds of times).

The MKP catchphrase also directly targets the IDENTITY of the person..."WHO YOU ARE".
Standard and classic stuff. Target the core identity of the person, and break then down in 48 hrs.
They can do it too.

The techniques have developed and been refined for decades now, everyone copying from everyone else, and refining them based on constant experimentation on real people.
Stay the hell away from people who openly BRAG about being able to break down your IDENTITY in 48 hrs. See how they enjoy bragging out in the open like that? Bad warning sign.

The only thing worse is when the same techniques are used by a LGAT seminar retreat, that does the opposite, and tells you its just a little "spiritual workshop" then hits vulnerable people between the eyes with a couple hundred powerful techniques group influence ever designed.
They can break down your core identity in 48 hrs, more than the last 20 years of your life, especially when people don't know what is going on. To the trained eye, that MKP catchphrase is like a loaded gun being pointed directly at your forehead.

Mankind Project leading question with embedded presupposition:
"Are you ready to learn more about who you are in 48 hours than you’ve probably learned in the last 20 years?"

Answer:
No, actually I am not ready to have the Mankind Project LGAT seminar systems set me up to have my core Identity broken down with 48 hrs of extreme persuasion techniques, to soften my mind up to enrol in countless other MKP project courses and clean out my bank account. I prefer to explore issues of Identity in a private and personal manner which are none of MKP's business.
I will NEVER allow MKP or any other seminar corporation to directly target the sense of Identity at the core of every personality, and then destabilize it, break it down, smash it, and try to reprogram it in 48 hrs to serve the interests of MKP.

Now MKP referral sales rep...here's a loaded question:

Are you ready to get the hell off my property in 10 seconds before tasting a little rocksalt square in your MKP behind that'll probably hurt more than anything you've felt in the past 20 years?

Is James Ray's lawyer lying for him?
Posted by: buffman ()
Date: October 30, 2009 09:13AM

From ABC news:

"Every single thing is your responsibility and nothing is your fault" says James Ray in a 2007 interview on The Secret. ABC news quotes Ray's lawyer right afterwards as saying ""...Mr Ray was not the one who was responsible for the design, construction, or maintenance of the sweat lodge. All of the participants in the event were fully informed of the health risks that could be posed by sweat lodges."

Participants were required to sign a waiver, which included a "death clause," but according to insider reports James Ray said "I have a surprise for you" on the final day before presenting the sweat dome. If this is true, then Ray's lawyer is lying about participants being fully informed of health risks posed by sweat lodges. Not to mention that Ray designed the entire 5-day event, lead every exercise, and strongly manipulated participants, encouraging them to remain in the dome even as people were throwing up and passing out.
