What is interesting is this endorsement by Tony Robbins of James Ray working for him, is only on that 1 place on the internet. It is NOT on the James Ray website anymore.
The internet archive appears to be from 1999.
So obviously, Tony Robbins put the hammer down on James Ray, and forced him to remove that endorsement.

But notice the quote from Tony Robbins, talking about the "unique technologies" being used by James Ray.
Technologies are the covert persuasion "techniques" being used in the persuasion and sales process. As said before...these guys are technocrats.
Professional covert influence technocrats.
They don't believe any of the random new agey "content" Belief Systems BS, that is the opium for the masses.
They are the ones who are detached and technically controlling the influence process.
They use those processes to sell ANYTHING.

Until one has taken these advanced trainings, its hard to understand the thinking processes behind it.
But that is what James Ray was doing. As said before from day one, it has nothing to do with sweat lodges or any of that. That is there mere "content" which is at best a distraction and misdirection.
What it is really all about is the highly technical and precise covert influence and group persuasion techniques.
James Ray had been doing that full time for many many years, in a technical and deliberate fashion. And they always select and train their inner circles in the same methods and techniques, as they have to know what is going on.
That is why the Megan-Josh playing dumb act is so obviously a charade.

It is kind of interesting that Rhonda Byrne pretty much disappeared after the backlash against The Secret really started picking up speed. I know she was involved in those contentious lawsuits with her original director, Drew Heriot, as well as her original Web marketing strategist, Dan Hollings. But those have been settled, though not necessarily to the satisfaction of all parties. (Translation: Rhonda pretty much prevailed.)

The big question is: Where's Rhonda now? Hiding out from yet more lawsuits, or maybe just from the criticism? Why hasn't she yet released that long-promised sequel to The Secret? There have been plenty of "movies" that promised to "take up where The Secret left off," but so far no official production from Rhonda and company.

At any rate, Anticult is exactly right about the folks who raked in millions from their association with The Secret, which in turn benefited hugely from being touted by O. The Secret served its purpose for its creators and certainly for its "stars," and even as more layers of Secret-related slime were revealed, many continued to milk all they could from being part of that project. While the James Ray debacle revealed, or perhaps created, yet another thick layer of slime, there's still a bit of exploitation potential left in The Secret.

For the time being, anyway.

It's interesting, though not surprising, that people are so divided between believing that James Ray has substantial hidden assets, and believing that he is in fact broke and was always exaggerating his wealth. Lately I've been vacillating on this matter. On the one hand, the art of wealth concealment is part of Hustledork 101, as I mentioned in an earlier comment. On the other, misrepresentation and exaggeration are part of the hustledork's basic marketing toolkit. Salty Droid seems to be leaning towards the "James Ray was lying all along" theory, and I have to admit he makes a good case.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Regarding compassion, it's a tricky subject when dealing with professional persuaders and known sociopaths.

I find the concept of "idiot compassion" from Chogyam Trungpa a useful distinction (note: Trungpa was a controversial character and involved in numerous sex scandals, but at least he was honest about them).

From an interview with Pema Chodron:

Quote

Idiot compassion is a great expression, which was actually coined by Trungpa Rinpoche. It refers to something we all do a lot of and call it compassion. In some ways, it's whats called enabling. It's the general tendency to give people what they want because you can't bear to see them suffering. Basically, you're not giving them what they need. You're trying to get away from your feeling of I can't bear to see them suffering. In other words, you're doing it for yourself. You're not really doing it for them.

When you get clear on this kind of thing, setting good boundaries and so forth, you know that if someone is violent, for instance, and is being violent towards you —to use that as the example— it's not the compassionate thing to keep allowing that to happen, allowing someone to keep being able to feed their violence and their aggression. So of course, they're going to freak out and be extremely upset. And it will be quite difficult for you to go through the process of actually leaving the situation. But that's the compassionate thing to do.
So in other words, the compassionate thing to do is put James Arthur Ray in jail for life and for his victims to sue him for damages.

Rhonda Byrne was going broke in her business, and was desperate for money.
She used her TV advertising and marketing skills to pull off a clever "impulse buy" with The Secret, taking advantage of human weaknesses of wanting something for nothing.
Every marketer knows that.
Her marketing for The Secret was basically identical to that used by Lottery companies, where one little ticket and you can get everything you ever wanted without effort instantly! Watch lottery TV commercials, and they sell the exact same thing in the same way.

After Rhonda Byrne made her millions, she retired.
Its too bad she didn't take all the millions she made and blow them on The Secret II, which would have failed horribly. Probably her financial people told her it was to risky, and its better to just put the millions into bonds.
Rhonda Byrne was actually very ignorant about "New Thought" [www.skepdic.com] which was the core idea of The Secret, as reflected in the few ideas she spoke about...badly. She put her foot in her mouth constantly, she had no idea of what she was talking about.
She just sold it extremely well, and got out at the top of the market.

As far as James Ray and the hidden assets, in a way its both.
Of course James Ray and his people are "crooks and liars" and so their companies are a disaster, and they lie constantly about their revenues.

But at the same time, James Ray would have learned many years/decades ago how to stash the cash.
Its not hard to do. Once you get a windfall in millions from The Oprah Effect, you DON'T pay off your company debts! God forbid! Let them eat desert sand.

You take your windfall from the Oprah Effect, and call up the right people, and they have all of the asset-protection-trust templates ready to roll. These are the highly paid financial people who know the legal ways to do this. (there is also the shady stuff as well). So those millions coming in from The Oprah Effect instantly leave the building.

Many people have misunderestimated James Ray. There is huge money to be made in these LGAT seminars, which is why any serious scammer goes into the field. Costs are very low, and profits high.
What you need though, is to get a famous endorsement, like Oprah.
Notice Tony Robbins has never been on Oprah...why? Years ago Robbins stupidly dissed Oprah in one of his recordings about her weight. WHOOPS!

But James Ray got lucky, and weaseled his way onto the Oprah show, and Oprah invited him back several times, like Michael Beckwith, and made both of them instant millions.
Oprah made James Arthur Ray millions.
And those instant Oprah Effect millions vanished.

That is another LGAT seminar Guru lesson. When you get a windfall, do NOT pay your company debts off. Get the money out and fast.
This ain't rocket science, its what you learn the first day of LGAT seminar Guru kindergarten.

James Arthur Ray - persecuted by the government for his knowledge?

And right now James Ray would believe he is in a good position.
His lawyers are paid, and there appear to be no visible assets for lawsuits.

James Ray has chosen to remain in a jail cell, for strategic positioning and propaganda.
Being in the clink would probably make him feel more confident, as if Paris Hilton survived jail, so can James Arthur Ray.
At this point, James Ray would use whatever internal techniques he can to try and convince himself he is going to get out and win, and would be incredibly angry and vengeful, and probably very confident.
He will easily be able to Reframe all of this to his closest followers as being persecuted, maybe even with some type of conspiracy theory. He'll try to wear being in jail as a badge.
Looking at how he has operated thus far, at this point James Ray would try to make himself totally believe that he is going right back to business.

Anticult is, once again, dead right.

Here's a series of posts that appeared on the YouTube channel of James Arthur Ray fangirl "liloumace". They reveal the name Ray wants on his badge, as well as the boundless imbecility of his followers.

The first comment appeared about 3 hours after news of Ray's arrest broke.

How dare you, and I mean how DARE you, use a quote from Martin Luther King in reference to the slimy, murderous sociopath, James Arthur Ray.
This is one of the most offensive things I have ever seen. Maybe it's because you're European and don't get it. It is a misappropriation of the highest order. Remove it immediately.
Quote

And how would you know that Martin Luther King was even referring to James Earl Ray when you make this accusation?(all the moreso given the 1963 date) If in FACT, that IS the case, then yes, the remark would be uncalled for. And her being European doesn't have a thing to do with it either.

duval14 (2 weeks ago)
Kwixotic, you are even dumber than this Lilou person. James EARL Ray assassinated Martin Luther King. I'm quite certain the quote isn't referring to him. They also never actually met.
I am certain that the MLK quote is referring to the fact that James ARTHUR Ray, Lilou's guru, was arrested, charged with 3 counts of manslaughter, and held on $5 million bail.
You are a complete moron, kwixotic. People like you should not use the internet unsupervised.

For the record, I think it's probable Ray squandered much of the money he made. He really had only 2.5 years of Oprah Effect money, and certainly didn't have a dime before that.

He has more than he appears to have and less than he'd like to have.

There's some money offshore, with his family, and in shell corporations, but it's survival money. Of course, survival for him is in the several millions range.

The non-payment of bail is both his usual way of life, OPM, and his first step on the road to martyrdom. I'm sure he's hard at work on his next New York Times best-seller, "Letter from a Yavapai County Jail" .

It's interesting that when these guys get caught, the whole law of attraction philosophy is conveniently ignored. If something bad happened to a 'normal' person, they would be told to ask themselves what they did to attract it. When their guru gets jailed for gross negligence with human life, he is a noble man undergoing some sort of persecution for his greatness.

As fellow LOAer Neale Donald Walsh is fond of saying (or rather "God" told him to say), "there are no victims and there are no villians". Disgustingly they even apply this to holocaust victims, but it's a whole different ballgame when they get caught.

@Penelope,

Conveniently ignoring their own teachings of personal responsibility is indeed a feature found in many of these bogus New Wage "teachers." It's also a symptom of something called malignant narcissism.

Here's an excellent list of 20 traits of malignant narcissism I just found on Google (from [www.drirene.com]). How many of these traits can forum members spot in James Arthur Ray?

Quote

1. THE PATHOLOGICAL LIAR is skillfully deceptive and very convincing. Avoids accountability by diverting topics, dodging questions, and making up new lies, bluffs or threats when questioned. His memory is self serving as he denies past statements. Constant chaos and diverting from reality is their chosen environment.
Defense Strategy: Verify his words. Do not reveal anything about yourself - he'll use it against you. Head for the door when things don't add up. Don't ask him questions - you'll only be inviting more lies.

2. THE CONTRACT BREAKER agrees to anything then turns around and does the opposite. Marriage, Legal, Custody agreements, normal social/personal protocol are meaningless. This con artist will accuse you of being the contract breaker. Enjoys orchestrating legal action and playing the role of the 'poor me' victim.
Defense Strategy: Expect him to disregard any agreement. Have Plan B in place. Protect yourself financially and emotionally.

3. THE HIGH ROLLER Successfully plows and backstabs his way to the top. His family a disposable prop in his success facade. Is charismatic, eloquent and intelligent in his field, but often fakes abilities and credentials. Needs to have iron-fisted control, relying on his manipulation skills. Will ruthlessly support, exploit or target others in pursuit of his ever-changing agenda. Mercilessly abuses the power of his position. Uses treachery or terrorism to rule or govern. Potential problem or failure situations are delegated to others. A vindictive bully in the office with no social or personal conscience. Often suspicious and paranoid. Others may support him to further their own Mephistophelian objectives, but this wheeler-dealer leaves them holding the bag. Disappears quickly when consequences loom.
Defense Strategy: Keep your references and resume up to date. Don't get involved in anything illegal. Document thoroughly to protect yourself. Thwarting them may backlash with a cascade of retaliation. Be on the lookout and spot them running for office and vote them out. Educate yourself about corporate bullies

4. THE SEXUAL NARCISSIST is often hypersexual (male or female). Pornography, masturbation, incest are reported by his targets. Anything, anyone, young, old, male/female, are there for his gratification. This predator takes what is available. Can have a preference for 'sado-maso' sexuality. Often easily bored, he demands increasingly deviant stimulation. However, another behaviour exists, the one who withholds sex or emotional support.
Defense Strategy: Expect this type to try to degrade you. Get away from him. Expect him to tell lies about your sexuality to evade exposure of his own.

5. THE BLAME-GAME NARCISSIST never accepts responsibility. Blames others for his failures and circumstances. A master at projection.
Defense Strategy: Learn about projection. Don't take the bait when he blames you. He made the mess let him clean it up.

6. THE VIOLENT NARCISSIST is a wife-Beater, Murderer, Serial Killer, Stalker, Terrorist. Has a 'chip-on-his-shoulder' attitude. He lashes out and destroys or uses others (particularly women and children) as scapegoats for his aggression or revenge. He has poor impulse control. Fearless and guiltless, he shows bad judgement. He anticipates betrayal, humiliation or punishment, imagines rejection and will reject first to 'get it over with'. He will harass and push to make you pay attention to him and get a reaction. He will try to make you look out of control. Can become dangerous and unpredictable. Has no remorse or regard for the rights of others.
Defense Strategy: Don't antagonize or tip your hand you're leaving. Ask for help from the police and shelters.

7. THE CONTROLLER/MANIPULATOR pits people against each other. Keeps his allies and targets separated. Is verbally skillful at twisting words and actions. Is charismatic and usually gets his way. Often undermines our support network and discourages us from seeing our family and friends. Money is often his objective. Other people's money is even better. He is ruthless, demanding and cruel. This control-freak bully wants you pregnant, isolated and financially dependent on him. Appears pitiful, confused and in need of help. We rush in to help him with our finances, assets, and talents. We may be used as his proxy interacting with others on his behalf as he sets us up to take the fall or enjoys the performance he is directing.
Defense Strategy: Know the 'nature of the beast'. Facing his failure and consequences will be his best lesson. Be suspicious of his motives, and avoid involvement. Don't bail him out.

8. THE SUBSTANCE ABUSER Alcohol, drugs, you name it, this N does it. We see his over-indulgence in food, exercise or sex and his need for instant gratification. Will want you to do likewise.
Defense Strategy: Don't sink to his level. Say No.

9. OUR "SOUL MATE" is cunning and knows who to select and who to avoid. He will come on strong, sweep us off our feet. He seems to have the same values, interests, goals, philosophies, tastes, habits. He admires our intellect, ambition, honesty and sincerity. He wants to marry us quickly. He fakes integrity, appears helpful, comforting, generous in his 'idealization' of us phase. It never lasts. Eventually Jekyll turns into Hyde. His discarded victims suffer emotional and financial devastation. He will very much enjoy the double-dipping attention he gets by cheating. We end the relationship and salvage what we can, or we are discarded quickly as he attaches to a "new perfect soul mate". He is an opportunistic parasite. Our "Knight in Shining Armor" has become our nightmare. Our healing is lengthy.
Defense Strategy: Seek therapy. Learn about this disorder. Know the red flags of their behaviour, and "If he seems too good to be true..." Hide the hurt you feel. Never let him see it. Be watchful for the internet predator.

10. THE QUIET NARCISSIST is socially withdrawn, often dirty, unkempt. Odd thinking is observed. Used as a disguise to appear pitiful to obtain whatever he can,

11. THE SADIST is now the fully-unmasked malignant narcissist. His objective is watching us dangle as he inflicts emotional, financial, physical and verbal cruelty. His enjoyment is all too obvious. He'll be back for more. His pleasure is in getting away with taking other people's assets. His target: women, children, the elderly, anyone vulnerabie.
Defense Strategy: Accept the Jekyll/Hyde reality. Make a "No Contact' rule. Avoid him altogether. End any avenue of vulnerability. Don't allow thoughts of his past 'good guy' image to lessen the reality of his disorder.

12. THE RAGER flies off the handle for little or no provocation. Has a severely disproportionate overreaction. Childish tantrums. His rage can be intimidating. He wants control, attention and compliance. In our hurt and confusion we struggle to make things right. Any reaction is his payoff. He seeks both good or bad attention. Even our fear, crying, yelling, screaming, name calling, hatred are his objectives. If he can get attention by cruelty he will do so.
Defense Strategy: Manage your responses. Be fully independent. Don't take the bait of his verbal abuse. Expect emotional hurt. Volence is possible.

13. THE BRAINWASHER is very charismatic. He is able to manipulate others to obtain status, control, compliance, money, attention. Often found in religion and politics. He masterfully targets the naive, vulnerable, uneducated or mentally weak.
Defense Strategy. Learn about brainwashing techniques. Listen to your gut instinct. Avoid them.

14. THE RISK-TAKING THRILL-SEEKER never learns from his past follies and bad judgment. Poor impulse control is a hallmark.
Defense Strategy: Don't get involved. Use your own good judgement. Say No.

15. THE PARANOID NARCISSIST is suspicious of everything usually for no reason. Terrified of exposure and may be dangerous if threatened. Suddenly ends relationships if he anticipates exposure or abandonment.
Defense Strategy: Give him no reason to be suspicious of you. Let some things slide. Protect yourself if you anticipate violence.

16. THE IMAGE MAKER will flaunt his 'toys', his children, his wife, his credentials and accomplishments. Admiration, attention, even glances from others, our envy or our fear are his objective. He is never satisfied. We see his arrogance and haughty strut as he demands center stage. He will alter his mask at will to appear pitiful, inept, solicitous, concerned, or haughty and superior. Appears the the perfect father, husband, friend - to those outside his home.
Defense Strategy: Ignore his childlike behaviours. Know his payoff is getting attention, deceiving or abusing others. Provide him with 'supply' to avert problems.

17. THE EMOTIONAL VACUUM is the cruellest blow of all. We learn his lack of empathy. He has deceived us by his cunning ability to mimic human emotions. We are left numbed by the realization. It is incomprehensible and painful. We now remember times we saw his cold vacant eyes and when he showed odd reactions. Those closest to him become objectified and expendable.
Defense Strategy: Face the reality. They can deceive trained professionals.

18. THE SAINTLY NARCISSIST proclaims high moral standing. Accuses others of immorality. "Hang 'em high" he says about the murderer on the 6:00 news. This hypocrite lies, cheats, schemes, corrupts, abuses, deceives, controls, manipulates and torments while portraying himself of high morals.
Defense Strategy: Learn the red flags of behaviour. Be suspicious of people claiming high morals. Can be spotted at a church near you.

19. THE CALLING-CARD NARCISSIST forewarns his targets. Early in the relationship he may 'slip up' revealing his nature saying "You need to protect yourself around me" or "Watch out, you never know what I'm up to." We laugh along with him and misinterpret his words. Years later, coping with the devastation left behind, his victims recall the chilling warning.
Defense Strategy: Know the red flags and be suspicious of the intentions of others.

20. THE PENITENT NARCISSIST says "I've behaved horribly, I'll change, I love you, I'll go for therapy." Appears to 'come clean' admitting past abuse and asking forgiveness. Claims we are at fault and need to change too. The sincerity of his words and actions appear convincing. We learn his words are verbal hooks. He knows our vulnerabilities and what buttons to push. We question our judgement about his disorder. We can disregard "Fool me once..." We hope for change and minimize past abuse. With a successful retargeting attempt, this N will enjoy his second reign of terror even more if we allow him back in our lives.
Defense Strategy: Expect this. Self-impose a "No Contact" rule. Focus on the reality of his disorder. Journal past abusive behavior to remind yourself. Join a support group

Enjoy life free of the Narcissist!!
The male gender is used. Your abuser may well be female.

There are some interesting comments about if James Ray could use his techniques on fellow cons behind bars.
There is a interesting dynamic in these LGAT seminars.
They generally don't work as well on so-called "blue-collar" folks. Also, they don't target the blue collar folks with customized techniques, as they don't have money to piss away.

But people who are more white-collar are targeted and are generally far more inclined to get sucked into these systems, like James Ray.
Many blue-collar folks look at James Ray and can almost instantly see he is a bullshit artist, and the techniques he's taken from others pretty much just bounce off them.
But the TARGETS of James Ray and many others like him, seem to fall into it quite quickly.
Some of that has to do with suggestibility levels.

And of course, all professional salespeople like James Ray carefully target and QUALIFY the customer, and don't bother with hard targets. They shoot for the softest targets.

But other cons behind bars aren't going to fall for the James Ray tactics, except perhaps in one of the white collar resort jails, which are not related to the charges.
But only one thing is certain, James Ray will do anything to try to avoid responsibility.

That is a good way to put it. From seeing how these Gur guys/gals operate, they make sure they stick windfalls away, as they think everyone else in the world is a scammer like them, as thus have an EXTREME fear getting sued. They obsess about that pretty much 24/7.
When they get their Oprah Effect money, its gone instantly. (unless of course they are into cocaine, gambling, booze, etc, where they piss it away).

So they keep their companies on the edge of collapse, as they don't care if the company goes under.
And they lie their ass off to their customers and the media about their alleged wealth, for vanity, Ego, and marketing.

But every LGAT seminar guru knows job #1 is to get the cash away from your companies instantly. Their #1 fear is getting taken to the cleaners. And they know all about that.

Werner Erhard was the master in this, even to this day he can claim to be a man without significant wealth, when in fact the family and he control enormous amounts of money globally.
Someone once made a little chart of the Werner Erhard linked shell companies, it was mind-boggling.
All they have to do is hire an expert in the field, who does all the work for them.
