*Spiritual Abuse* is sometimes difficult to define.
But in general it happens when:

# ‘a leader with spiritual authority uses that authority
to coerce, control or exploit a follower, thus causing spiritual
wounds’ (Blue, p.12)

# one or more persons in a relationship is damaged
spiritually and such wounding or scarring affects their relationship
with God so that they develop a distorted image of God and of
themselves

# a person is disempowered rather than spiritually
empowered – instead of the relationship being ’safe’ it becomes
‘unsafe’; the abused person becomes dependent on the abuser, who
imparts subtle or not-so-subtle messages that ‘you won’t survive
without this relationship’

# someone with authority blames the person for a
problem rather than empathetically working towards healing; leveling
judgment where support is needed; using their power to attack
another to subtly gratify themselves

# a pastor or leader or authority figure regards
themselves as having supreme authority *because* of their status
(‘I’m the pastor, that’s why!’); their word is final, and not
to be challenged; they regard others as ‘too immature to handle
truth on their own’ (and like the scribes and pharisees often
quote Scripture to bolster their views); to disobey the leader
may even be tantamount to disobeying God; the leader/s are involved
in many/most people’s important decisions

# people go along with ‘authority’ whether or not
one agrees with the authority, or whether the authority is right;
people in the system must deny any thought or opinion contrary
to the leaders’; the leaders overtly and covertly remind others
regularly of their authority; ‘obedience’ and ’submission’ are
preached virtues

# the leader is plagued by unacknowledged doubts
and/or feels inferior or insignificant, and compensates by gaining
power over others. Or the abuser is narcissistic, and is obsessed
with a desire to do something grandiose for God

# a church and its leaders become legalistic rather
than affirming the Christian good news about grace; there is an
adherence to formulas rather than freedom in Christ; peoples’
lives are governed by rules and ‘measures of commitment’ (frequent
attendance at meetings, tithing, etc.)

# young idealistic people want a ‘charismatic’ leader
to follow, a community to join, or simple answers to complex questions

# shame is induced because a person feels they rarely
‘measure up’

# a congregation is berated for low attendances,
poor giving etc. – focusing away from a pastor’s defective leadership
style

# a person is not healed following prayer is blamed
for having a defective faith: in these situations the person is
‘revictimized’ to excuse the leader (and perhaps that leader’s
lack of faith!)

# this- or next-worldly scare tactics are employed
to keep people in line; or promises of this- or next-worldy health
and wealth if the ‘ministry’ and its beliefs are supported

# a person’s ‘boundaries’ are not respected

# there is not a free flow of communication within
the group: the leader/s control vital knowledge

# leaders appeal for ‘unity’ to protect themselves
from scrutiny/ appraisal

# attending meetings regularly is most important
- even at the expense of family life

# people feel guilty for feeling critical of the
abusing authority – they have been warned frequently about ‘disloyalty’
(Some abusing systems require members to sign ‘loyalty statements’).
Often they want to leave the abusing system but they feel trapped
- and they will have a significant chance of being trapped in
future abusive relationships, unless they get help.

Notes: # The key NT text for spiritual abusers is
Hebrews 13:17: ‘Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.
They keep watch over you as those who must give an account’. Ken
Blue comments: ‘The NT word here for "obey" (peithomai)
does not refer to the obedience that may be demanded by right
or imposed by decree’ (p.35).

# Ken Blue notes seven symptoms of abusive religion
from Jesus’ diatribes against the Pharisees in Matthew 23: ‘1.
Abusive leaders base their spiritual authority on their position
or office rather than on their service to the group. Their style
of leadership is authoritarian. 2. Leaders in abusive churches
often say one thing but do another. Their words and deeds to not
match. 3. They manipulate people by making them feel guilty for
not measuring up spiritually. They lay heavy religious loads on
people and make no effort to life those loads. You know that you
are in an abusive church if the loads just keep getting heavier.
4. Abusive leaders are preoccupied with looking good. They labor
to keep up appearance. They stifle any criticism that puts them
in a bad light. 5. They seek honorific titles and special privileges
that elevate them above the group. They promote a class system
with themselves at the top. 6. Their communication is not straight.
Their speech becomes expecially vague and confusing when they
are defending themselves. 7. They major on minor issues to the
neglect of the truly important ones. They are conscientious about
religious details but neglect God’s larger agendas.’ (pp. 134-135).

# ‘We must have the courage to follow Christ’s example
and overturn the system, be it a marriage or an organization,
if that system is wrong. Silent submission in the face of violence,
dishonesty and abuse will only enable that abuse to be passed
on to generations’ (Arterburn and Felton, p.72).

# Not all strong leaders are abusive; not all ‘black-and-white’
fundamentalists are abusive; perhaps (though I have my doubts)
not all ‘we alone are right / all the other churches are dead’
groups are abusive; not all ‘hell-fire’ preachers are secret adulterers
etc. (unlike the high-profile American televangelist who in the
midst of a sermon series about Rahab the harlot was visiting one
himself)

# ‘Abusive spiritual leaders gain followers because
they are, in one way or another, attractive. Their attractiveness
may very well be their genuine commitment to the work of God and
their sincere desire to train mature disciples… [Some of these
leaders] are not deliberately abusive’ (Blue, p.97).

# Watchman Nee has influenced many with his views
about hierarchy, rank and subordination: ‘Hence you recognize
not only the head but also those whom God has set in his body
to represent the head. If you are at odds with them, you will
be at odds with God.’ (‘The Body of Christ’, NY: Christian Fellowship
Publishers, 1978, pp. 20-21) ‘…Insubordination is rebellion
and for this the one under authority must answer to God’ (‘Spiritual
Authority’, NY: Christian Fellowship Publishers, 1972, p.71).

# Often in spiritually abusive situations external
‘worldly’ behaviors are castigated (can you name some?), but not
materialism, greed, lovelessness, injustice etc. And there is
more ’sternness’ than joy.

# Abusive leaders rarely say ‘I’m sorry’, ‘I wonder
how I could have done better…’, ‘I don’t know’, ‘You were right’,
‘I need help’.

# Abusive leaders usually insist on special privileges,
honours, titles, honorary degrees etc. to bolster their insecurity.

False Apostle Mikes latest twit:

New blog post up. What 9 year old soccer players can teach the church about unity:

How about false Apostle Mikes photo op with the Mayor in the Philippians.
And Mike wants to teach them the Apostolic ministry.
Mike wants the spiritual authority, honor and money from the church.

The list above on spiritual abuse gives us many examples of the spiritual abuse by false Apostle Mike Villamor, Jeff Barnes and many other people in leadership at TPCWOC.

Apostles and Prophets Today

Remember: just because one performs miracles, even inside a church, does not mean God is working. We should be more on guard inside the church than we would like to think. In 1 Corinthians 4:6, we are told no to go beyond what is written. If one contradicts the apostolic writings and teachings, then they are false (2 Cor.11:14). Those who go beyond the word having God speak to them directly with new revelation, become puffed up with self deception.

A true apostle would point out the false ones. Yet today, not only do those who claim to be apostles fail to do so, but there are threats and manipulations for those who do not go along with what they are trying to portray. 'Jezebel,' 'Antichrist,' and 'Blasphemer of the Holy Spirit' are common terms used for those who speak against them.

More specifically, verse 17 reminds the church of the apostles' warnings of mockers coming in the last days that are natural men not having the Spirit. Today we find those who claim to have more of it than others. Nowhere do we find the apostles preaching they are anointed and certainly did not imply they were more so than others. The danger of these mislead leaders is that they will cause divisions without realizing the harm they do, nor the judgment that they will eventually incur upon themselves.

Scripturally we find that the apostles were all personally chosen by the Lord Jesus. Mt.10:1-4 and in Lk.6:12-16 names the 12 apostles, one of which was chosen for perdition. The 70 as well as the twelve were also trained and sent out. The position of the apostles were not permanently fixed number until after the resurrection (Matt. 19:28-30; Lk. 22:28-34; Jn. 21:15-18). The number 12 then becomes an eternally established number.

One of the Biblical requirements for one to be rightly regarded as an apostle were those following Jesus from the time of John’s baptism. They also were to have seen the risen Lord be witnesses of his resurrection.

Other requirements within this first qualification of being from John and a witness to the resurrection. He must have been taught divine truth by Jesus personally (Gal.1:1,12; 1Cor.15:3).

Unlike those who claim miraculous healings today the apostles healed totally and instantaneously

It was permanent not as some claim today that one must continue in faith or the devil will steal it away.

We find the only apostles mentioned in Church history after the bible was completed were false ones.

Once the scripture was completed we find no more apostles

This should settle the issue that just as the 12 became a closed group, so likewise Paul ended the Lord choosing others. The fact is there is no more apostles chosen after Paul.

Jesus said it was an evil and adulterous generation that seeks after a sign and a wonder. Today our generation is repeating the same error as the unbelieving Jews except it supposedly from believers

We are warned of false apostles those who claim authority that is not from God and can do miracles. In much the same way as the false prophets God told Jeremiah,” I have not sent them or spoken to them.”

Notice he says they were last examples condemned to death, weak, poor, hungry, beaten and homeless. Its obvious we don’t see those who claim these positions today living in such a manner. They for the most part became martyrs. Today those who claim apostolic positions live in luxury and opulence.

History tells us that all of the apostles (minus one Judas) were killed for their service to the Lord. This is hardly the case for those claiming this position today.

In Rev. 2:2: “unto the church in Ephesus write… Thou hast tried them that say They are apostles and are not, and has found them to be liars.”

They were false apostles because they did not see the risen Lord nor were they commissioned by him. They did not live or teach to the standard of scripture.

What we see is false prophets incorporate their own agenda. We find censoring the false prophets protects Gods people from harm, physically and spiritually. Anyone who allows people of this type of questionable ability to go for it in their church needs to question whether they are pleasing man or God. As a shepherd do they really care for the sheep or are for promoting their own ministry.

No prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation. There seems to be a common denominator with all the new cults that disguise themselves as the original. They have new views on basic fundamental doctrines that have been accepted for almost 2,000 years it usually starts with the Lord told me or he appeared to me or I went to heaven. Sorry the job description has been filled your to late.

What do all false prophets have in common? A hope of not being tested! They count on the people not to test their writings by putting guilt and fear in those that would dare to question Gods “anointed ones”.

That is to make sense out of the Gospel. The Bible teaches to preach the word not new revelation knowledge.

Ephesians 2:20 says that the church has been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Ephesians 3:5 reads that the mystery concerning the church has been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets through the Holy Spirit. The scriptures indicate that these roles were fulfilled in the first century, and do not continue today. Many believe the apostles were also the prophets and that they wrote the future down in scripture for us. Acts 13:32 names Judas and Silas as also being prophets. Jude admonishes his readers to avoid false doctrines not by listening to the living prophets or apostles, but by recalling what the apostles already taught them in vs.17. The church today does not need new prophets and apostles today, just to listen more carefully to the old ones

Common Characteristics Of How Cults Operate

For abusive cults, the key word is CONTROL CONTROL CONTROL by Submitting to the Leadership - leaders tend to be the absolute end, looked to as prophets of God, as specially anointed apostles. Or they can be a strong, controlling, manipulative personality who demands submission even if he changes his views or conflicts occur in doctrine or behavior. sometimes they can be looked on as God Himself. Often to obey a leader and their teaching is equal to obeying God.

AN "US AGAINST THEM" ATTITUDE AND PHILOSOPHY: Anyone who challenges the cult's doctrine is automatically branded as an enemy which is usually anyone who disagrees. The cultists feel that they are being persecuted unfairly. On the other hand, true Christians accept persecution, knowing that it tests the genuineness of their faith. New members are told Satan will cause friends and family to say bad things about their group and that they should only trust their new family. We should expect to be persecute for the truth we have. It becomes an 'us against them' mentality. clichés are given, such as "Who is more important, God or school?' or "Don't you love God with all your heart, don’t you trust us, do you know of anyone who cares about you more?" "We are the only ones who have the truth," "don’t you want to be found faithful."
