Star,

Tolle is another con-artist/charlatan. He is indeed in the same category as Swaggart, Jimmy Baker and Byron Katie. Most people don't even stop and think they are taking advice from a glum and morose man who was destitute and suicidal for some years telling us how to live and even meditate when he himself has zero education in psychology and meditation. Who was a veritable nobody until he got on Oprah's show to pimp his book.

And you don't go Oprah unless you want to be nationally known and promoted. BTW that's how Byron Katie and James Arthur Ray got their cults going is by appearing on Oprah.

Now he's very rich and famous.

This quote is filled with logic errors and factual errors. First, Swaggert and Baker spent 24/7 raising money and having shows on TV asking for more money. Tolle made all of two... count em... two public appearances in 2010 and has one scheduled for all of 2011. Hardly a comparison. Second, the fact he may have contemplated suicide in his twenties has ZERO to do with what someone knows or is now. That is just ridiculous. Many people hit bottom and then come out the other side far wiser. Third, how do you know he had "zero education in meditation?" What "education" are you talking about? Meditation techniques can be learned by a book and the real education in meditation is self-learned. Fourth... no one.. no one... "Goes on Oprah's show." You act like people just line up and can get on easy. Does not work that way. Oprah was given his book by a friend and then she invited him, not the other way around. Also, his book was top 10 for three years, whereas most Oprah books are lucky to stay on for 6 months, or less. Besides, the Power of Now was on Oprah before she even started her book club.

And, as much as I can't stand Katie, you are again completely wrong to say that she got going because of Oprah. She was gaining quite a following years before Oprah ever heard of her. I like the ideas of this site, but your arguments would be far better if they had fact behind them. When you are wrong, you are wrong, and there is a lot wrong in your statement above.

Some times Tolle is laughing very quiet and more quiet.
Did he laugh about himself, about the listening public
or about the non commenting public ?

Wineguy

Ok, you've established your credentials as a defender of two cult leaders.

Do you have anything else to add?

How do you know you have helped many?
Where is the measurement?

There is no measurement or regulation of the Byron Katie techniques, its the wild west, and many many people are getting badly hurt.
Untrained unlicensed people should not be conducting "therapy" or general mind-screwing on people.
They can do a lot of damage.

The reality of what Byron Katie has really done, and what she is really all about will eventually come out.
And the reality is documented in this thread in great detail.
Byron Katie is a skilled master of persuasion and creating illusion.
And she has made millions doing it.

Anticult,

You have now debunked a profession by which I have helped many. I have read sooooo very many of your posts. Thank you anyway as I have nothing more to say except to have a nice day.

"Certain Motives are Beyond the Reach of Argument"

Dear TAC, you are dealing with an astrologer who believes in the craft.

For those interested, here is a URL for an essay on how recently astrology even became part of the Greek and Roman culture. It happened only when the Greeks were defeated in the Pelopennesian Wars and on the verge of take over by Rome. Astrology only became interesting to the Mediterranean peoples after they lost political agency and became collectively anxious about the future, and lost their former personal and political agency.

The interest in astrology was a sign of a sick society. It coincided precisely with a rejection of the best of Greek science and investigative philosophy.

Quote

About 280 BCE more detailed information on astrology was made available to Greek readers by the writings of the Babylonian priest, Barossus without (it would seeem) causing any great excitement. The real vogue for astrology seems to start in the second century BCE, when a number of popular manuals, especially one composed in the name of an imaginary Pharaoh, the Revealations of Nechepso and Petosiris begin to circulate widely, and practicing astrologers appear as far afield as Rome. Why did (astrology) occur then and not sooner? The idea was by then no novelty, and the intellectual ground for its reception had long been prepared by the astral theology which was taught alike by Platonists, Aristotelians and Stoics, though Epicurus warned the world of its dangers.

One may guess that astrology's spread was favored by political conditons.

the troubled half century that preceded the Roman conquest of Greece, it was particularly important to know what was going to happen. One may guess also that the Babylonian Greek who occuppied the Chair of Zeno encouraged a sort of 'trahison de clercs' (the Stoa had already used its influence to kill the heliocentric hypothesis of Aristarchus which, if accepted, would have upset the foundations of both astrology and the Stoic religion)

"But behind such immediate causes we may suspect something deeper and less conscious; for a century or more, the individual had been face to face with his own intellectual freedom and now he turned tail and bolted from the horrid prospect--better the rigid determinism of astrological Fate than the terrifying burden of daily responsibility.

Rational men like Panaetius and Cicero tried to check this retreat by argument, as Plotinus was to do later, but without perceptible effect; certain motives are beyond the reach of argument.

Dodds The Greeks and the Irrational, page 247

Having made a detour, let us now return to Byron Katie.

THe conditions described by Dodds as favoring the spread of astrology also favor the spread of commercial gurus such as Byron Katie.

Lucian of Samosata described the careers of two such (he wrote during the First Century CE)

Lucian's descriptons are fascinating when compared with the descriptions of various commericial gurus on site today. He told of a miracle monger named Alexander who had a magic snake. Alexander developed a huge following.

All the more impressive given that these were the days before the internet and skype.

Earlier on this thread discussion took place about the chance that BK might have read Ken Keyes books while in the halfway house.

[forum.culteducation.com]

Be that as it may, on the Wikipedia page for Ken Keyes, there is this

[en.wikipedia.org].

Keyes died in 1995

Quote)

Ken Keyes, Jr. (January 19, 1921, Atlanta, Georgia – December 20, 1995, Coos Bay, Oregon) was a personal growth author and lecturer, and the creator of the Living Love method, a self-help system. Married four times, Keyes wrote fifteen books on personal growth and social consciousness issues, representing about four million copies distributed overall.

In his life Keyes sold or distributed millions of books, lectured to many people, spoke to dignitaries at political gatherings, and knew and moved among the self-help elite, including Wayne Dyer, who said that Keyes "literally got me started on this glorious transformational journey." His books are still available thirteen years after his death, and a small group of his students maintain ties and carry on his methods. However, Keyes' organization essentially died with him.

Keyes employed no explicit strategies to ensure his organization would continue or grow without him, and he did nothing that would promote any established organization or personal legacy. He focused, instead, on teaching his methods. He never sought out a major publisher for his books, but self-published them all, and even brought back in-house one book that had been placed with a major publisher. Of the three teaching centers he founded, only the last was eponymous.

Is Byron Katie in the 1% re: occupy Wallstreet demonstrations?

I would love to be able to stir up an inciteful parallel between Byron Katie/Byron Katie International and the global protests against corporate greed. I recall antiCult posted some amazing information about the ~charitable~ practices of Byron Katie and related business. To bring it all together with the speed of a few keystrokes. Maybe Huffington Post would publish it if it was written just so...

Byron Katie is already occupying Wall St.
With her millions of dollars of investments.
Byron Katie is the 1% in terms of personal income.

Byron Katie is a capitalist entrepreneur CEO of Byron Katie International, making millions and millions of dollars in income for...guess who...Byron Katie. (and hubby what's his name).

Byron Katie thinks greed is good...for her.

Byron Katie started out selling real estate, and would have been flipping sub-prime mortgages, but she learned years ago, she could make a lot more cash flipping people than houses.

Anyone with that kind of restless ambition cannot teach anyone peace of mind.

In his book/memoir Permanent Midnight, Jerry Stahl, a TV writer, tells us this: "Hollywood isnt about manufacturing dreams. It is about manufacturing frustration." Making people feel frustrated, discontented so theyy'll go out and buy stuff.

Thats all about the New Wage scene. The entrpreneurs/euses promise you relief but keep just a bit frustration in your psyche so you keep coming back for more. And more and more.

A really great spiritual teacher would, by definiation put him or herself out of business.

You'd outgrow your need for that teacher the way kids outgrow their clothes and shoes.
