Invisible: I think I was no longer active in the church - when I heard that an amphitheater was being built on the land at Shiloh. I suspect this decision was made by a couple people (at most), and rubber stamped by Apco. I doubt anyone had the courage to question it...and ask about John's 'vision' of the convalescent home for those who spent decades laboring at Shiloh. Not

Yes it was Jeff. He regained most of the use of his wrist and hand. Whoever asked about the arrangement between the sawmill and Shiloh, it was supposed to be 5 dollars an hour to Shiloh for this slave labor. What did you guys get for that? 80 bucks a month and all the corn chowder you could stomach.

Hey, all you rabble-rouser who left the insanity. I see I did not word that quite right. I get stressed when telling this sh*t and type worse... I have to fix my words in my above post. I was sleep-deprived for months before I got sent to Shiloh. I was exhausted. How much wisdom is there to have a father-in-law push my husband and I to go to Shiloh when I needed to be home sleeping and my

Reepicheep, Looking back, yes, I think it was illegal. Here is an example: my adult son is his own power of attorney as he is mentally competent tho' physically disabled. He got sick. I called the on-call medical provider and was told to take him by ambulance to the ER on Friday. On Friday my son refused to go. That was his right to refuse tho I did not agree. On Saturday his temp was h

Thaks kBOY. NancyB, I can't even imagine how awful that period of behing held against your will at Shiloh must have been. Couldn't that be considered illegal, as in kidnapping? More props to you for coming out with your sense of self intact. I have long wondered how many people over the years felt "trapped" in places like Shiloh. With workers having no savings, no transp

R E E P During my stint there (June '78--Sept '79) we never supplied any materials that I know of to Shiloh since it was basically built by then. Before that time I do not know. $$$ probably yes.

Typer, Thank you for sharing your account of being injured at the sawmill. I have a hard time understanding the mentality that doesn't use basic safety precautions, especially after children (the Nisly boys) had suffered severe injuries. Thank goodness for Jody insisting that you be seen in Iowa City. Good grief! Does anyone know...was the sawmill transformed from a private bisiness to

N A N C Y b Thanks again for your valuable contributions. Your proximity to these situations was something few people had. The revelations regarding JRS' attitude towards the 'proper authorities' is more than disturbing. Changedagain, OMG! these horrific stories are building. Glad you are OK. I don't know if I ever answered if I was ever detained or not. I felt like I was. in the late '70s, I worked my nurse jobs while my husband worked kingdom biz, basically cause no one else would hire him-, sorry to say. I worked 2 jobs. Typer, I am so glad the nurse sent you in the ER in time. John Bender and Dan Nisley's families were very dear friends of my family - I miss them. It is nice to read about them. Those two families were very progressive compared to the old order Amish in the Kalona community. Not getting medical care is the way they knew. Old Order Amish do not have phones, nor cars nor the money to pay med

T Y P E R Big W O W ! As one who is not even in the medical profession, as soon as you mentioned the swelling, I knew it was probably blood-poisoning. You were very lucky. Dan operated(s) out of a paradigm that dismisses many conventions of modern society, for which there are plenty of justifications. (The opioid epidemic immediately comes to mind.) I, like yourself, would not attribute

In reference to KBoys sawmill experience and mine which follows: They put me in the sawmill during the winter of 1976 after helping put up sheet rock in the warm 1976 summer months. After I left the sawmill in the summer of 1977 to work in the LA printing, I heard the story of the person who had h
