Interesting video clip where Moo's own guru, Papaji, suggests that the soul of the deceased Osho (Bhagwan Rajneesh) may be speaking through he, himself:

[youtube.com]

We know that some of Osho's followers gravitated towards Papaji when Osho died. Papaji may have been quick to secure these followers by not denying the suggestion that Osho could somehow speak through him.

Osho was a confirmed cult leader, and he was associated with a plot to murder homeless people as depicted in the documentary "Wild, Wild Country" - yet Papaji speaks favorably of him?

How the online guru videos make us feel

The Guardian has published a full length feature story on a New Age guru named Benhinho Massaro. Massaro has had massive success via his online videos.

Persons affected by Moo videos may find this interesting reading. Here is an example:

Quote

Lukas Jansen (a pseudonym) stumbled upon Bentinho’s YouTube videos when he was 25, living at his parents’ house recovering from a period of heavy drinking, obsessive gaming and panic attacks. He had already explored the writings of other self-help gurus, like Eckhart Tolle and Adyashanti, but he found Bentinho more immediately relatable.

In particular, Jansen was drawn to Bentinho’s message of self-empowerment, the idea that suffering could disappear through force of positive imagination alone. “He told us that we are all the best and have infinite potential, and at those moments, I felt like I was in a bubble. I felt super happy, super energetic. I felt on top of the world,” Jansen said. “Like a child can go into his imagination and forget the whole world, that’s pretty much what I did when I watched the videos. I could distance myself from this suffering Lukas with a very mediocre life.”

But the moment Jansen stopped engaging, the high would wear off and he’d once again be faced with the reality that he was a man in his 20s living with his parents, rarely leaving his room due to crippling anxiety. To avoid the comedown, Jansen retreated further into Bentinho’s teachings, sometimes watching up to 10 hours a day.

Having waded my way through Bentinho’s content, this level of dedication was perplexing. But Jansen explained that what really held him was this sense of manufactured intimacy that Bentinho cultivated. In some videos, Bentinho would spend minutes simply gazing into the camera, smiling, occasionally whispering “I love you.” Jansen felt seen. He would respond beneath Bentinho posts with comments like, “You’re amazing. You’re the most beautiful spiritual teacher ever I’ve ever seen.”

I spoke to several other Bentinho followers, a diverse demographic, who described a similar feeling. In moments of extreme vulnerability – after being fired, during a divorce, coming off prescription drugs – they had gone online looking for spiritual solace, and were guided by the invisible hand of YouTube’s recommendation algorithms to Bentinho. He told them that all they needed to improve their lives was to believe that their lives were good, and in front of the screen, with his unceasing affirmation, they could momentarily believe it was so.

Though they never met Bentinho, these followers were the silent engine behind his spiritual movement. They shared his content, commented on every one of his posts, and were often responsible for moderating his Facebook page. They were repaid with new spiritual content from the guru. But the joy they derived from the videos was hallucinatory, dissociative, fleeting. When they looked away from the screen, they were once again faced with the reality of their lives. So they went back online.

One woman told me that Bentinho’s teachings gave her a dopamine rush: “It made me feel manically better. It was definitely like a drug.” Another said that the videos allowed her to disconnect from her emotions. “It’s all about pretending you are in a life in which you really aren’t,” she said.

Bentinho Massaro offers to guide his followers towards communion with a higher life force. ‘Spiritual influencers’ are flourishing online. Their model is built on recruiting eager followers – but what happens when they attract vulnerable people?

I stumbled upon this just now from the official "Moojibaba" website:

[mooji.org]

It's pretty funny! Interestingly, this weird "open letter" admits that there were mistakes made at Monte Sahaja, but it doesn't tell u what these mistakes were. It's a bit disappointing. I would really, really love to know more about these mistakes! Maybe there will be a 'Part 2' to this bizarre open letter?

To Quote the letter:

"Mistakes will be made; they happen. God, life allows for that and it is unavoidable. ...What matters is that we strive for harmony and learn from our errors. Like this, mistakes do not leave bad odours or dirty footprints inside the consciousness. Sahaja is no exception. But even with the clearing mist of hindsight, we see nothing that resembles the heinous lies levelled against our Master and our community.

Mistakes can be made by anyone, however in the most vicious cases, we see that the lies were not innocent mistakes nor misunderstandings, but orchestrated attacks with the intention to slander or fabricate a scandal. The scope of some of the allegations are truly outrageous, including slanderous claims of abuse, preying on women, and running a destructive cult in Portugal.

The clear intention of these attacks is to cause harm to Moojibaba’s credibility as a teacher and to create doubt in the minds of those drawn to him. One clear and irrefutable example of this is that in these places where negative content was posted, whenever people posted their own positive and direct experience in response to the lies and slander, the posts were immediately deleted."

Hmmmmm. Mistakes are "unavoidable", are they? Like when Old Moojibaba mistakenly slept with his female students? Only they don't say that - they phase it as "preying on women", but of course we get their gist.

At least now they acknowledge what the allegations actually are! Not like when Moo released his very confusing denial speech, around one year ago, where no-one knew what he was supposed to be denying. So many people had their doubts after that strange speech was released; it was a huge P.R. blunder.

And here we see another massive blunder. The letter takes a very accusatory tone. Mooji and the Sangha are apparently allowed to make 'mistakes' and God is on their side; but their detractors must surely be lowly, lying, slanderous degenerates! (God is not on their side.)

The whole laughable letter ends with a link to the now-notorious "Culture or Cult" website that was established by a paid cyber-jackal in order to discredit journalist Be Schofield. Firstly, the Moo team denounce "lies and slander" in no uncertain terms. Then they promote lies and slander against a journalist they perceive as a threat. I think the average punter can see through this.

I really don't think the average person is going to be fooled by such a bizarre and ridiculous 'open letter' - although it is kind of entertaining. It does give you an insight into the cult mind-set, with their double standards, holier-than-thou attitude and their odd, thinly veiled admissions of wrong-doing.

They probably would have been better off if they stuck with their lawyers - at least the content of the letter would have been more intelligent!

Regarding the "New" Open Letter
From Monte Sahaja

Sahara71 has already commented on the "Open Letter" copied below from Mooji's Monte Sahaja organization. I share the concerns regarding the total lack of addressing specific allegations. A general lament of how fame or notoriety brings criticism, particularly in this age of the internet, does nothing for Mooji. The lack of any mention of the "inappropriate sex" charges, the shooting of the heron (crane?), the alleged overworking of ashram "volunteers, the charges regarding financial inappropriateness, or of any other, would seem to leave the defense lacking.

Also, as also noted by Sahara71, the links at the bottom of the open letter included one to a totally discredited hit piece about Be Scofield by a paid cyber-bully (allegedly paid for by the increasingly dubious-seeming Aaravindha Himadra). That a piece like that, which is a proved fraud, would be cited by Monte Sahaja does not help to prove their accuracy or veracity.

Just to be clear, I am somewhat of a neutral observer of and about Mooji. I was never a devotee of his, and have only seen him a few times in (hugely attended) satsangs. I am much more focused on revealing the truth about the excremental, fraudulent, and criminal 'teacher' James Swartz

"Bad is bad," though, and if this is the best Mooji's folks can come up with, it is not looking good for Mooji. It would be sad if someday come to the conclusion that, "Well, Mooji was bad, but at least he didn't drug and rape underage girls and poison neighbor's pets like James Swartz."

Here's the full text from Monte Sahaja;

Quote
Monte Sahaja (for Mooji)
LETTER FROM MONTE SAHAJA
Response to Rumours and Allegations about Mooji, the Sangha and Monte Sahaja Ashram in Portugal

We are reaching out in response to questions that come to us occasionally regarding some online rumours, slander and allegations about Mooji, the Sangha and Monte Sahaja, Mooji’s home and ashram in Portugal.

A deep and heartfelt gratitude to all those who sent letters of appreciation, love, encouragement, and solidarity at a time when hurtful accusations were being posted online. Our Sangha is a strong community of genuine, wise, inspiring and beautiful souls; nearly every country on this planet is represented in this great Sangha-field. We feel encouraged and uplifted by your response. Thank you.

The huge body of messages that we receive are in gratitude and appreciation of Moojibaba’s presence in the world and of the integrity, power and directness of his teachings. However, we have received some responses expressing doubts and concerns after viewing the negative content online. These rumours and distortions can be unsettling, especially to those who don’t have direct experience with Mooji, the Sangha or Monte Sahaja. We know first-hand that these claims are untrue and bear no resemblance to life in the ashram nor to our beloved Moojibaba. Our love, dedication and commitment to serve the worldwide Sangha compel us to share this letter in honour of them.

Some of what you read here might feel direct and strong, but it is backed up by our living experience. Some forms of the negativity have been outright vicious lies, while other forms are from people who genuinely did not resonate with this path. We have no issue with people of differing opinions; this letter is primarily meant to address the slander, distortion and lies.

In this world
nobody is left without criticism,
without exception.
All the great people have been criticised,
even Rama and Krishna!
If Rama and Krishna were present today,
they would also be criticised!
You have to put up with it.
There is no need to run away.

~ Yogi Ramsuratkumar

CONCERN FOR OUR TIMES
We live in an age where people are free to write whatever they like online. This freedom of speech and expression has many benefits that are undeniable, and for which we are appreciative and grateful. However, at present, it also means that anyone can easily write or express anything they like, true or false, on the Internet. People can post anonymously or under false names, with very little possibility for their posts being challenged or removed regardless of how distorted, untrue or slanderous they are.

Woven into our collective consciousness is an ingrained belief that if you read it in print, it must be true. Being on the receiving end of this kind of attack has been a strong bite that we have actually come to appreciate. It has exposed a deep conditioning in all of us. We must admit that we also believed so many things that we read, heard or watched in the past about others that turned out to be false. A great saint in India said:

Take a mixture of sand and sugar.
Be like the wise ant
that only takes the sugar
and leaves the sand untouched.

ABOUT THE LIES AND SLANDER
Some of us who know Moojibaba from the early days remember when he would say that there would come a time when his reputation will be attacked by people who are angry or disturbed by his presence. The same is true for any genuine voice that comes to bring light and Truth into the world. This is not unique to him or to anyone who stands up for Truth; it is as old as mankind. This is not the first nor the last we expect to see of such attacks toward us especially as Mooji’s teachings are broadening in the world.

However virtuous or well-intentioned we are as human beings we cannot avoid the natural challenges and mishaps that arise when many people come together to work for even the most noble cause. Mistakes will be made; they happen. God, life allows for that and it is unavoidable. There are those who wouldn’t accept this and adopt a perfectionist standpoint and of course their life will be strained by such rigidity. What matters is that we strive for harmony and learn from our errors.

One clear and irrefutable example of this is that in these places where negative content was posted, whenever people posted their own positive and direct experience in response to the lies and slander, the posts were immediately deleted.

Our Master often reminds us that what people say about others or life is not necessarily what is true but rather what is portrayed by their own misconceptions and tendencies. Such people reveal only what is inside their own minds. We have seen that much of the negativity aimed at our Master comes out of jealousy, spite, prejudice, bad-mindedness and surprisingly, in the context of Satsang, the carnal mind’s fear of true freedom.

People take some small elements of truth and exaggerate and distort them with their own stories and lies. They post these lies online to support their own agenda. Some even do this to promote themselves and gain personal attention and fame. Moojibaba often says that a true seeker avoids the company of those who gossip. He reminds us that indulging in such habits is like spreading a cancer or virus inside any community.

For many years Mooji has lived in a hut in the centre of Monte Sahaja, in the very heart of his community. He is full-heartedly in service to the many people who come for spiritual advice and guidance. From morning till night, he is also fully dedicated to the various activities and projects of the ashram. His heart turns no one away. Moojibaba and the Sangha naturally have a beautiful and caring relationship with the local Portuguese community and the surrounding villages. If one feels to have a clear understanding of what is happening in the ashram, better to seek out the testimony of the many who have studied and lived with Moojibaba. Some testimonies are available online; you can see them here.

DEALING WITH ONLINE NEGATIVITY
Being a relatively young Sangha devoted to the realisation of Truth and to supporting the work of Moojibaba, we were not skilled, accustomed to or well educated in addressing slander, rumour, and innuendo of such nature. We sought counsel and were advised to ignore the lies. However, in some cases we quietly explored legal action because we could not simply sit by and let such slanderous activity go unchallenged.

We respect the rights of those who are not attracted to Satsang with Mooji to express themselves. We do not expect that everyone can or will resonate with this path and it is not Moojibaba’s intention to attract more and more people. On the contrary, he recognises that only those who, by grace, feel naturally drawn to him and his teachings and pointing will find that Satsang is their door to freedom. They will have the strength, earnestness and resolve to face the various challenges that appear when a genuine seeker meets their spiritual Master. It is natural that some people will not resonate with his teaching. We have no disputes when it comes to personal preferences and opinions that are based on individual choice.

IN CONCLUSION
This was a deliberate attempt to discredit Moojibaba and divide the Sangha. However, we found that it had the opposite effect—we grew more united, trusting in our own actual experience of the power and truth of who Moojibaba is and the spiritual wealth of the Sangha. We know the value and auspiciousness of what it is to have a living Master walk among us. We will continue to share the truth that continues to light our way.

History has shown that often those who bring light, pure love and a genuine opportunity to be liberated from ignorance and suffering have been persecuted. We did not feel to give so much attention to anonymous voices shooting from the dark. Those of us who know Moojibaba and the Sangha can trust in our experience. But for those who have not yet met him or been touched by his teachings, they now will have to pass through a gate of discernment. It is likely that Internet negativity will continue as part of our present human culture. Each one will need to discern. Choose what is true and Truth for you.

Challenges will come from time to time on every seeker’s path. Mooji encourages each one to transform all difficulties into opportunities for spiritual growth and maturity. How often we have heard him say, ‘The wise man builds a house with the stones his enemies throw at him and lives happily in this house.’ How fitting these words are at the present time in human and spiritual evolution. Mooji encourages us to have faith and trust in God who he serves and who he regards as the all-pervading Source of all that exists.

Those who have been touched by Mooji’s presence and wisdom in the heart should not be easily swayed by such shallow and baseless accusations but should refer back to their own heart’s testimony. Mooji encourages all to stand in the authority of their own seeing and direct experience. He says, ‘Strive to recognise and merge with your own true nature and Self. Here alone you transcend the pairs of opposites and exist beyond the world of praise and blame, supremely happy.’

As a Sangha the most important thing for us is that we continue to move in the very height of Moojibaba’s pointings. We continue to draw such powerful spiritual benefit from his presence and teachings. We know Moojibaba devotes his life to those in search of Truth. In fact, we witness that he serves all whom he meets with respect, openness and love. He lives a simple and humble life in front of all who live in and those who visit Monte Sahaja. There are thousands of people who will attest to the extraordinary beauty, power and love experienced in Moojibaba’s presence and Satsangs.

Today, Monte Sahaja is regarded by many visitors around the world as one of the most simple, authentic and spiritually infused places on the planet as its sole (soul) purpose is for awakening to universal consciousness.

May we continue to honour, without exception,
the one Truth which unites, inspires and uplifts us all.
May God bless and protect our beloved Master, Moojibaba.
May this great Sangha and, in fact, all humanity
continue to be blessed by God who is the Supreme Self.

With love,
Mooji Sangha Team

Do you agree? To me, to repeat, it seems that it's not looking good for Mooji.
If anything, I feel worse about Mooji regarding the accusations now than I did before reading this message.

Again, if this is the best they can do...

It has been a difficult year for Mooji 2019. Mooji was exposed to be a false guru by many ex-disciples and videos, indeed Mooji did not get any mainstream media interviews at all in 2019. Mooji becomes furious, his "dream" of being a spiritual celebrity begins to fall apart in 2019....It does not look good for him...

I watched some of the videos on the "Voices from Satsang" page. [mooji.org]

I don't know if they put that page up in response to the criticism but either way it's nice to see that the people in those interviews seem to have positive experiences with Mooji.

I finally got a copy of "The Guru Papers" by Joel Kramer and Diana Alstad. The chapter "The Traps of Being a Guru" helps me to understand (and have some compassion for) the unique set of challenges Gurus have to deal with. To respect the authors' copyright, I won't quote the whole chapter, but here's the first paragraph:

Quote

The Traps of Being a Guru

The person most at risk of being strangled by the images demanded by the role of guru is the guru. This includes the great danger of emotional isolation. The literature of Eastern spirituality is rife with warnings about the dangers of the spiritual path. There is good reason for this. Ironically, contributing to these dangers is the common and mistaken notion that the further along “the path” one gets, the less one is likely to succumb to temptations —until one is fully realized, at which point one is no longer subject to the hazards of self-delusion. But in actuality the reverse is more often true, as the temptations get more insidious, powerful, and harder to resist. Seeing more deeply contains no guarantee against one’s mind becoming concomitantly more clever at fooling itself. Moreover, when anyone is treated as an “arrived” human being, the potential for self-delusion is far greater than in any other context.
At the heart of the ultimate trap is building and becoming attached to an image of oneself as having arrived at a state where self-delusion is no longer possible. This is the most treacherous form of self-delusion and a veritable breeding ground of hypocrisy and deception. It creates a feedback-proof system where the guru always needs to be right and cannot be open to being shown wrong—which is where learning comes from.

Tha last sentence of what I quoted from the book makes me think:

It creates a feedback-proof system where the guru always needs to be right and cannot be open to being shown wrong—which is where learning comes from.

Maybe that's a function of this forum: to blast holes in the feedback-proof systems of gurus. Mooji looks better lately, let's take credit for that. ;-)

Thanks Horowitz for the intriguing video in a language which I don't speak either! (If anyone reading this can offer a translation, we would love to hear from you!)

I can offer a quote from the author taken from the comments section below the video and translated via the internet:

I think this interview mentioned by Horowitz and Sahara71 is in Romanian language. I recall there were quite a few Moo's devotees in Romania, so maybe someone from Romania may come along and translate a few more passages..

It was nice of you Sahara71 to leave out the part where he calls Mooji's feet hairy monkey paws.. That sounds racist to me. He also compares Mooji to Bob Marley (because he's also a Jamaican with dreadlocks?). Reminds me of the "coreism" guy who said in his video that Mooji should stop the guru-thing and do his reggae-thing or something (because he's a Jamaican with dreadlocks?).

The youtuber also rails against other spiritual teachers who do pricey retreats (I'll post the whole google-translation of his comment below).

I think he has a point; those teachers ask prices for their retreats that cover a whole lot more than their basic needs, especially Eckhart Tolle. What do they do with that money? Do they use it to create a lifestyle where they're free from humbling circumstances like discomfort or contact with people who treat them normally instead of revering them? Often this seems to be the case, they tend to create feedback-proof systems, as it says in "The Guru Papers".

I like that Shinzen Young kept having a teacher himself, even when he was already one of the most established meditation teachers. He said he needed a teacher to "kick his ass" every once in a while, i.e. to keep him humble. Unfortunately that teacher (Zen master Sasaki Roshi, who was also Leonard Cohen's teacher), turned out to engage in inappropriate behavior himself (sexual relations with much younger female students).

Maybe it's safe to say by now that even the most "awakened" people aren't free from ego or egoic desires and need life-circumstances that keep their egos in check.

Here's the Google-translation of the Romanian youtuber's comment:
