To answer the OP, spiritual abuse is particularly horrific and very difficult to recover from. It doesn't matter if it was a Buddhist cult or Christian cult, it will feel like jumping from the fire into the frying pan going back to the Bible, Koran, etc. or organized religion unless the ex-cult member does some really intense therapy and discovery about their experience.
