Very true, Upgrayed & Hitch. Members would say that Ikeda can tell how strong your faith is just by looking at you and that he can tell which member is truly striving and/or struggling in their practice. As a child growing up in the cult, he was practically Santa Claus: “He knows when you’ve been bad or good so be good for goodness sake!”

Hitch, this is the first time that a Youtube clip you posted actually put a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I’m glad you wrote out some of the main lines of the video in your post because I couldn’t even get through it. Contribution campaigns were always sleazy: they’ll tell you out of one side of their mouth that everything you give will come back to you tenfold. Then, out of the other

I didn't have to see the Youtube clip to know exactly what you're talking about. The people in the area I used to practice in did this all the time and it drove me nuts as well. Many people did it but there's always that one guy who does it for literally anything and everything throughout the course of a 90-minute meeting. Even though I was steeped deeply into the cult from 0 ye

As far as speculation on Ikeda goes, something’s definitely up from the recent World Tribunes that I’ve had the opportunity to glance over. In the past, many of the main Ikeda articles in the World Tribune were transcripts from meetings (the ones they made videos of that the SGI shoved down your throat every month). Now, curiously enough, the guidance articles are always “from a series of recen

You’re right, Hitch. That clip was good for a laugh: from to the senior who needs help locating the kaikan that’s several feet away from his face to the fellows picking up cigarette butts and proclaiming “More fortune for us!” And the guy opening the door… I wish that dressing like one half of the Blues Brothers would’ve been considered acceptable Soka Group attire during my days in the cult bec

Quoteevergreen Also saddened by a member that I care very much about who is only interested in telling me that my life will always suck if I don't chant. I am doomed to have bad things or bad karma if I don't change my life. I used to check in on her as she is older and has been abandoned by most of her other members and her own family. My aging parents have been abandoned by the or

Bear with me because this post is a little long, but Shavoy’s mention of how the mentor and disciple thing is causing a negative stir in the SGI has prompted me to write this. Towards the end of my time in the SGI I was always wondering if I was the only one who was bothered by (or even noticed) the fact that all we ever did was sit around and praise Ikeda. Last year, I decided to finally retur

QuoteFreeheartandmindSome of the experiences were pretty lame. "I got off the train, and the bus was right there! I was so in tune with the environment because I did gongyo this morning. When I skip morning gongyo I am out of tune and the day seem off-kilter." This was an ACTUAL experience. I’ve heard that experience before! Many times over, no joke. Some folks will attribute ju

Yes, Hitch, we do seem to think alike! I think we were both fed the same amount of SGI Kook-Aid that didn’t sit well with our equal amount of rebelliousness. But I promise not to infringe upon your trademark of posting awesome Youtube links (well, unless I find something really really good!). Speaking of which, I just saw the “Oh Daisaku, I Wanna Be Like You Hoo Hoo” video. Wow…. I realiz

QuotecoolshyoneI was always asked all the time to give experiences at district meetings about all the benefits I was receiving from my practice. Should have seen some of the reactions when I told the leaders I didn't have an experience to give. Some of the experiences I heard people give at meetings at times were so off the wall that I had a hard time keeping a straight face. I remember

They wouldn't understand. 2 of them already told me that I will never be happy if I stop. What sort of "Buddhist" predicts and practically wishes unhapiness on others? Sorry, Hitch, but I can’t help you with your mountain retreat question - I surely would’ve remembered a cow sliced in half! But your post made me recall some local NSA campouts we had in our area. I was never a nature person to begin with, so the combination of the great outdoors and goofy YMD shenanigans was truly horrifying. I also recall traveling out-of-state to attend culture festival prac

QuoteHitchRegarding studying, we were pushed all the time to study the gosho, independently, at study meetings and even officially take study department exams (and progressively move up to higher and higher levels of in-depth study). I remember it well, because I never wanted to, nor was I very interested in all the fairy tales, but I did, because I HAD to. Totally agree. There was much mor

QuoteKRWow, the burning pocket gohonzon brought back a long repressed SGI memory. At the time my living situation wasn't hospitable so I was trying to get a pocket gohonzon given that I was rarely at home. The SGI simply refused to give me one. No rhyme or reason I was just simply refused a pocket gohonzon. Think about that one for a minute and see the transparent arrogance of an so-called r

QuoteHitchPS, Couldn't resist adding this Cousin Rufus Workout . This is actually the kind of really stupid crap that most often took place, especially at youth meetings. I love the look on the face of that young guy at 0:29. It screams “What the hell are these people doing?” That look was plastered on my face quite often at many meetings.

I constantly butted heads with leaders towards the end of my time in the SGI regarding the numbers game. Leaders loved to say “The fastest way to do human revolution is to do shakubuku!,” as though they discovered some scientific equation to overcoming obstacles. It was a dirty and manipulative way to convince people with serious problems that their struggles could be easily solved if they just

You know what I don’t miss? Filling in those daimoku charts that you were given for every single campaign. You filled in the little blocks for every 15 or 30 minutes of chanting and were then required to turn it in so everyone’s daimoku could be tallied up for the success and victory of the campaign. They always made a point of how your chanting needed to be “sincere” in order for it to work, b
