The hard-hitting human potential seminars of the 70’s exploded onto the scene with their fantastic promises of “transformation” and “enlightenment”. The most famous and successful of them all was Werner Erhard’s “est training" - a two weekend, in-your-face seminar that has since become a legend.

The Book Werner Erhard Didn’t Want You to See

But back in ’74, when these trainings were still full of hard-hitting theatrics and plenty of profanity, est was all the rage and everyone was interested in knowing exactly what this “est training” was because Erhard’s standard answer was “it is what it is: an experience, which can’t be put into words.”

So, after taking the training and subsequently being invited to become an est trainer myself, the opportunist in me thought, “This can be put into words". And since I had never seen anything in writing from est, and had never signed an agreement about what I would or wouldn’t do as a result of taking the training, I began to write down my experiences.

Six months later, the result was a 200 plus page manuscript, which I quickly sent to Erhard as well as a dozen or so large publishers.

The result?

Well, none of the publishers responded, but Werner sure did. Yessiree! He had the gall to sue me in Federal Court claiming (among other things) that I had infringed his copyrighted material - but he didn’t attach any material to his complaint!

To make a long story short, Erhard sent seven lawyers into the courtroom. I had one. But it turns out it was all for naught as the judge simply looked up over his spectacles and threw the whole case right out of court.

But there was more good news to come.

My book, est: Playing the Game the New Way, soon found a publisher, made its way onto the New York Times bestseller list and sold nearly a million copies. Not long ago, thirty years after its initial publication, some used copies of the book were selling for over $100 a piece! Not bad for a book that almost never saw the light of day, huh?
