A friend got into Landmark through his sister. The company was intense pressuring him to spend more and more money on more courses and materials, and to get more friends to join. (Pyramid scheme/multilevel marketing style).
Then he started doing strange things that isolated him from his friends, like reinterpreting past events and accusing people of doing the wrong thing to him, but in the guise of 'forgiving and talking through their problems'.
I'm talking "you didn't seem to have a good time that night we went to the nightclub" became an accusation of "you hate the way I live my life and have resented me ever since", literally on that scale. It was to the point where we'd be at the pub and he'd make a show to take a person aside to give them a talking to, or ring people out of the blue and ask them to criticise him then use that to criticise them in turn. It turned his already not great self-esteem into a behavioural problem for his friends and ultimately it seemed really cult-like and exploitative of people in need. I don't get the impression he's a rare case.
It would be far better to find a counsellor and talk through your problems that way, with people who don't have a financial incentive to get you into their way of thinking.
This is a very heartening discussion. One person posted a long list of
links documenting the many complaints about Landmark made over the years.
Quickly the pro Landmark peeps arrived in force to astro turf.
When busted, the miscreant showed no embarrassment.
