I know it is an ahsram where people practise yoga and meditation. I know some families live there as well. Does anyone know anything more about this place? Is it harmless or something else..?

If you go to

Scroll down to the section on gurus whom Ken Wilber admires. One of them is Sri Aurobindo, one of the two (now deceased) leaders of Auroville. It describes some of the claims Aurobindo made. He apparently claimed to have been the reincarnation of both Leonardo da Vinca and Michelangelo, which presents a problem as both men lived during the same time spread.

Jeffrey Masson visited Auroville in the 1950s just after Sri Aurobindo died and while 'the Mother' was still alive. That account is in Masson's book 'My Father's Guru.'

Read these two accounts, then compare them with material from Auroville sponsored sources and decide for yourself.
