Psychotherapy is a well known breeding ground of cult leaders. A recently exposed example in the UK being Derek Gale who was recently struck off and exposed for activities very similar to those you describe. He has a very small group of "clients" whom he exploits emotionally for his own graification as much as for their money. He extracts just enough in fees to live a comfortable but n

There is an ongoing debate in the UK about the statatuory regulation of psychotherapy. Following on from the high profile striking off of the psychotherapy cult leader Derek Gale some of those who condoned his practises and even made extensive representations to the Health Professions Council in defence of his abusive actions have formed an organisation to promote non compliance with the law

Thanks to all of you who sent ideas, comments and observations about what someone like Gale might do once he was exposed and ridiculed. Most of you seem to have been correct in that those around Gale from whom he was drawing support rather than unduly influencing have distanced themselves from him. Those that supported him at the HPC hearings and gave glowing testimonials of his professional p

How do cult leaders react when exposed? Derek Gale the psychotherapy cult leader who operates out of the Gale Centre in Loughton, Essex, England was recently struck off the register by the Health Professions Council and now the UK Council of Psychotherapists, unfortunately here in the UK this does not stop him practising as either a counsellor or even as a psychotherapist and as far as we are

First of all thanks to those of you who took time to not only read what we have written but also to those of you who took the time to comment in either direct e mails or through the personal message system here on Rick Ross. We do however wish that Mr Gale himself had shown the courage he previously showed by writing here in public but that was his choice not to. It is very important to unders

Mr Gale is currently participating in a series of disciplinary hearings being held by the Health Professions Council. These hearings are open to the public and anyone can attend simply by contacting the council and requesting a visitors pass. Although the schedule has been delayed due to the unfortunate illness of a hearing panel member they are due to resume on 21st May 2009. However o

I highly recommend you make aforaml written complaint to the UKCP concerning Spectrum. I have found Mike Bowen, their complaints tsar, to be very helpful and supportive. He seems to have a personal determination to clear out the abusive deadwood from psychotherapy before the legally binding regulatory structures are put in place. We are currently dealing with a sexually abusive therapist by

Since we first posted on this site concerning the 'psychotherapy cult' run by Derek Gale in Loughton, Essex, UK, there have been some quite interesting developments. Thanks to the Health Professions Council (HPC) the regulator for Art Therapy in the UK, Gale has been suspened pending a full inquiry. You can find the HPC's conclusion in full here: You will note that th

With the governement white paper on statatuory regulation of psychotherapies due shortly there is now a fantastic opportunity to lobby our MPs for real and radical change in the training, supervision and legal standing of organisations such as Spectrum. I would also like to let anybody that is suffering from post Spectrum or any other cultic abuse situation know that specialist organisations s

Thank you MediaB. You have helped clarify and identify a very distinct process in Mr Gale's abuse of his clients. Hypotheses: He attends a workshop at Spectrum. Gets drummed into him how amazing and special they are. He has to go one better. His workshops are mixed sex. He doesn't use educational films from America, he gets his clients to bring in their own porn collectio

To a lay reader your descriptions of the regime at Spectrum seem remarkably similar to the descriptions of life at the Center For Feeling Therapy in California as detailed by Marybeth F. Ayella in her book Insane Therapy - Portrait of a Psychotherapy Cult.

Derek Gale is a known psychotherapy cult leader who has recently been associated with the leading psychotherapy academic Prof Windy Dryden; We have extensive evidence from ex client sources that Gale attended a sex therapy workshop at Spectrum and then enforced his version of their teachings on his group. In response to bb01234 Derek Gale operates his psychotherapy practice out of the Gale Centre in Whitakers Way Loughton. The centre was renovated at his clients expense and using them as 'volunteer' labour during summer 2004. Derek Gale has a small psychotherapy 'family' of between 15 and 20 people that meet fortnightly as a group on alternate mondays and individually

Oprah is definitely a problem as she is an open supporter of Abraham Hicks of all things. This video is clearly the English version (professional subtitles) and I suspect it comes from Canada or was picked up at a TV sales market. If anyone has a DVD or CDR version I would be more than happy to approach the BBC in the Uk with it. Drop me a line Cheers

This video is excellent. Does anyone have it on DVD/CDR? As Google have now taken it down. Probably under the pretence that it infringes the copyright of the French producers. We are in the UK but would be happy to pay shipping or buy through E bay. Keep up the good work.

Not only does it reveal what goes on at Landmark but also almost any psychtherapy led cult. Does anyone know where the English subtitled version comes from? It obviously wasn't transmitted in France like that? is it from Canada?

To be in a cult you have to be brainwashed and live in a commune wearing crap clothes. Derek is not Rasputin or Charles Manson, we are not loony criminal murderers.
