Hi left_of_the_dial, You don’t have to defend mindfulness as a path to happiness and mental stability. No one is arguing against it here. It’s the harmful bunk these people (gurus) sell along with techniques such as mindfulness, staying in the present, not obsessing over past and future, meditation…etc (techniques that DO make people feel better) that I have a case against. Eckhart Tolle is s

Do you know what is even more insane than Byron Katie. People who believe in free will and at the same time hold the Calvinist ie current born again doctrine of pre-destination. In other words, they believe that God has already determined the outcome of their life, but have free will to change it. Now that's insane. Or how about the classic Campus Crusade for Christ line from the four

I totally agree. All these people who write books and claim to be experts. What a total fraud. Like James Dobson, the expert on the family who rakes in 100 million a year and tells everybody how to keep a family together. Too bad he's a total hypocrite since his very own son, Ryan Dobson is now on his second marriage. Good Job Dr. Dobson, next time I want to get a book on family matters

One other amusing thing...Oprah keeps pumping this book, and it will stay #1 for as long as she does so. But every 2nd 5-Star comment at Amazon, seems to be a self-shill. They say things like.... ET's book is great, my shit don't stink no more, and I am now a sexy millionaire monk with tons of sex, money, houses, cars, and happiness, and my cancer got cured too, and I lost 50 lbs w

Thanks for the info Suzy, I think you hit it right on the mark. By what is really disturbing about this, is that Oprah is absolutely promoting the hell out of this thing, almost everyday she is selling selling selling ET to the millions, with not one tiny iota of critical thought about it. And she is doing it very craftily, by not showing him, and making him seem 'mysterious'. This

Oh well Suzy, I suppose we'll have to disagree. Maybe you, Mr. Tolle, and Osho did suffer some kind of identity crisis that you've all mistaken for some state of enlightenment. I have also suffered from depression, been diagnosed by a doctor and given prescription medication. I took the medication for two days and quit because I had a deep sense that medication was only masking a solvab

"until my 30th year, I lived in a state of almost continuous anxiety interspersed with periods of suicidal depression". Then he gives a bizarre account of how one day his... "mind stopped", and "there were no more thoughts", "for the next 5 months, I lived in a state of uninterrupted deep peace and bliss", "the suffering self collapsed".

Hi Freedom Fighter, I think you're onto something. The world could do with some colourful kid's books on the subject of cults. And once you've finished the Dick and Jane series, I think there's always room for another Asterix book: Asterix and the Cults, perhaps. I'd love to see Obelix tossing stoney-eyed cult members around the forest!

Golfer, I am sorry you've fallen for whatever kernels of truth Byron Katie uses to suck people toward her black hole of madness, and now you feel you need to defend her. I feel I need to defend truth. I'm posting here, below, what I posted on another section of this board. With all due respect, none of your points matter, nor are they logical. I'm not talking about other phon

The guy wrote a pretty good book that seems to have helped a lot of people. Seven pages into the thread and no one has presented any evidence that what he teaches poses any harm or danger to anyone or has caused any harm or danger to anyone. Lots of irrational fear about his writings causing "cognitive suicide" even though no examples or well thought out explanations are given. When you

Gee, vlinden. That's amazing that a person who is insane is a best selling author and seminar speaker. I wonder how she does it if she is so insane? But wouldn't that make the millions of people who buy her books insane? Are you saying that millions of people including me are insane. Interesting since you have never met me you can judge so freely. Ah, judgment, how does it feel?

Byron Katie was once insane and appears to be insane now. Even Landmark and The Forum aren't as wacked out as Katie's lunatic reversal of reality. I can't believe how many people are listening to this woman. The world is a mad house. Here is a review of her book from Amazon: If no stars were available, I'd choose that. This self-help book is aimed primarily at helping th

Okay, it may be unfair of me to suggest that Tolle likes to inhale the great Rastafarian jolly weed. And even if he did, so what? But looking into those eyes, I'd certainly suggest he considers taking his holidays to someplace else other than The Netherlands! He might be a little sick with the flu?

Anticult, that 'creepy' picture of Tolle is quite revealing, I think. Now, where have I seen that look before? Oh, yes, the expression of someone on too much giggle grass, if you get my meaning! With regard to 'watching' your thought processes (again, a notion by someone on too much weed), of course it's easy to understand. I mean, I have a thought and I 'watch

Your so called new age flavor of the month is bigger than every 3 years later. Gee, he must be a real flash in the pan, lol. I guess that's why Oprah picked his book for her book club and is doing an online seminar with him. Yep, you were right, he's a flash in the old proverbial pan.

No, it's not. You can prove this to yourself how there is more than one "voice" inside your head. Do this. Close your eyes and think to yourself, I will wait for the first thought to come into my mind. As you quietly are waiting for the thought, you are silently thinking- watching. Soon, a thought out of nowhere will arise in your mind. If you noticed, this was an entirely d

I find Byron Katie dubious in that she charges enormous amounts for her seminars. Why is it if somebody charges money for a product, that makes it bad or evil? Since James Dobson charges for his books, would you call James Dobson dubious. How about Rick Warren? Joyce Meyer? They all bring in millions of dollars a year in income, MUCH more than Byron Katie. I find your criticisms dubio

A weird aspect of Tolle's 'wisdom' is when, in Chapter 1, he states that we should start listening to the voice in our head. He calls this 'Watching the listener'. But isn't that contradictory? I mean, is he saying use the mind to listen to the mind? You can read the Chapter 1 excerpt here: Barnes & Noble

Corboy, I like the softer TP = softer mind metaphor. Thanks. The first step is always softening up the Mind. I find it very interesting that Eckhart Tolle seems to have a lot of support in the New Age community, at least for now. But its strange, ET is selling you can have less of an Ego, and this leads to bliss. Well, he also states that we are all to be like Jesus. Well, last time I ch
