Hi BES18. I don't know if Jupiter replied to your questions, since she stopped visiting. Feel free to contact me via the private messaging available on this forum. I too grew up in Subud.

Hi Andrew Reading yours to Jupiter, two things: (a) It seems that telling your own story is as compelling, if not more so, than telling Jupiter's. If you say Jupiter was maligned, well, they can make excuses: she got it wrong, she was part of a bad group, blah, blah, blah. But if you say that you read Subud texts that made you want to throw up… it's a little more difficult to disc

Hi Jupiter As a lover of literature, and a critic of Subud ideology, you might enjoy this site: The whole thing is tongue-in-cheek, and the message is: When you have at your doorstep great Western literature, why are you wandering over seeking Eastern literature, which you don't understand. This: had me in stitches.

Hi Jupiter You ask: "How are you dealing with this now? For me it has been a long process of external therapy but most importantly a constant process of serious self-questioning. Being angry at myself was really important - to prevent myself from ever making the same mistakes - but forgiving myself was important too." I've heard this advice about "forgiving myself&quo

Hi Stranger I too, as a child of cult members, am very curious as to why people in the 1950s through 1970s fell prey to that kind of thing. One clue I found is the occurrence of what are called (by serious historians) "great awakenings". These were periods of intense religious ferment, in which many new cults, sects and movements sprang up. Many of the fringe versions of Christian

I don't think its accurate to suggest that Subud encourages crisis. Crisis is dealt with an event arising from "trying to go too fast" towards God. As Jupiter points, this happen in lots new religious movements, where people overdo some mind-altering practice. This from the Buddhists: "An overzealous young karate student decided to meditate and not move for a full day and n

The first Ibu's penchant has been noted by other members who knew her. I think your hypothesis about Pak Subuh is not sustainable. He didn't come to the West. He was chosen by Western "seekers" on their hunt for new spiritual products. Central to this hunt was J G Bennett, who paraded a long list of exotic "finds" before his audience, like a kind of spiritual P T

Hi Jupiter I'd be grateful if you wrote a little about "exit anger". I think I'm experiencing a lot of that myself. Some of it, I think, is directed at myself, at the fact that I could make excuses for so long, and that it took so long for the cognitive dissonance to collapse, leaving me with a truth that had been staring at me for a long, long time. If Constantine's information is corroborated other researchers (and I assume you mean non-CT researchers), please cite them. Please do not cite UFO, crop circle, psychic phenomenon or 9/11 sites. I will accept reputable, peer-reviewed journals or credentialed academic and research institutions. The label "conspiracy theorist" is a technical term, like "cult", to descri

Alex Constantine is a conspiracy theorist. Google his name. Subud has many problems, and flaky aspects to it. You won't understand what these are by reading a person who has even more problems, and is even flakier. For more paranoid fantasies by Mr Constantine, see: SAMPLE: "In this report, written by the outstanding writer and researcher Alex Constantine, the incredible

QuoteToniHi All: My friend wrote the following essay. It only touches on "our issues," but I think he did a good job over all. Much rings true for me (raised in a group) and my now-grown children (born and partially raised), with much family still involved. Keep learning! You can integrate and have successful lifes! FYI: Article "Adult Children of Cult Members" ton

Hi Jupiter Thanks for all of that information. I'm going off-line for a few days (away from town). I'll write you more when I get back. I've sent a query to INFORM. I've written down "Demon Haunted World" on my "books to find" list. You might like this site, by an ex-Mormon, Bob McCue: As part of his self-therapy, he wrote many essays on th

Hi Jupiter. I too am a second generation Subud member. I too think that it has devolved into a cult. Most of the people in Subud do not act badly, but there are enough to cause serious trouble. The behaviour you describe is at the worst end of the spectrum, and it's caused by the Subud belief system which is itself a train wreck, a collision between Javanese mysticism and Western seekerism.
