(in reply to SoI Kills and the long thread that followed) A semi-public message board is like a city bus. You can make and enforce some elementary rules like "no smoking", "no skates" etc (incidentally, when I was a kid the signs said NO SPITTING and smoking was permitted), but you can never control everything at 100%. Some passenger might annoy another with his remarks, so

There are three moderators putting in a couple of hours each every day. One of them lives 10 or 12 time zones away from the others, so their work is nicely spread over the day. Thus, on average, approval shouldn't take more than a few hours. Then again, it's all done on a volunteer best-effort basis, so if someone is sick or on holiday, or simply quarreling with her wife[*], appearance

You can't re-register; at least not with the same e-mail address, because it's "taken". In any case, trying to circumvent the problem haphazardly is not constructive, so let's actually find it and solve it instead. There could be a charset problem. Do you have any funny characters in your password? If so, use the "did you forget your password?" link to reset

But OK, let's say you log in successfully, try to post, and end up on a login page again. What happens if you enter your username and password again? The normal behaviour of the board is to ask again for your username and password every t

Your browser must accept cookies. If it doesn't, the server can't remember you and you will be asked to log in each and every time you try to do something that only logged in users can do, e.g. post. Z

Well, Raisley has survived longer than I would ever have expected, much thanks to his brutal stupidity. Like the Neanderthaler, sort of, who also survived way past his prime time while cementing his own destruction. Anyway, I think Raisley took the point this time. The attack on Rick's server stopped on Monday. And an attack on my own server which begun on Friday, stopped today. In the meanw

QuoteJohn FoxPerhaps we could employ the Slashdot effect ... in terms of propagating the article? No, not just yet. If you play out good cards too early, you'll have to play too high in the next round. Let's see if Raisley can get back to his senses and only then escalate again. I have a whole stack of cards up my sleeve; /. would be only one of them. Z

Yeah, they're spreading. Not as fast as I hoped, but yet: Raisley knows this, but he doesn't know when to call it quits. Too bad for him; he'll end up destroying himself. Z

Update 2008-03-28: It seems there is no need for any more copies of the article. Big thank you to everyone who helped. === This message board is now again the target of a massive DDoS attack. That's why everything is slow and unresponsive right now and that's also the reason why the board was down all of the weekend 7-9 March. The attacker is the same fruit basket that has been att

If your e-mail address is hidden, what you describe is not possible. I would assume either coincidence (same or similar spam sent separately by mail and as PM without any connection between the two) or that you received mail notifications of the PM spam, but not the spam itself. Or perhaps, if the spam was sent as a "reply via PM" to an existing posting and you had checked "send re

There was no trace of you in the system; none whatsoever. I now registered you with the username and e-mail address in the parent. I checked and verified that the confirmation mail was sent and was correctly received by 74.220.207.108. So you should have it. Of course you will need to recover your password once your account has been activated. Z

From September 26 to December 14 the www.culteducation.com website was continuously under a DDoS attack by a loonie in Arkansas who thinks he can control the flow of information on the Internet. After December 14 we had two weeks of rest. Yesterday the attack started again, this time against this forum. As a result, the forum was working very badly yesterday and for a few hours not at all. There is no option to mark them as "read" which makes it hard to determine when I actually have a new Private Message. See for an explanation of why your previously read PMs now appear as unread. There is a way to mark them read, namely to read them. This wou

The delay is indeed long, but inevitable. There are almost 30.000 registered users on thsi board. This means that 30.000 user names have to be pulled from the database on the server and then get downloaded to your computer before the list will appear and you can scroll it. It's bad, but right now we all have to live with it. At least 60% of those 30.000 registered users are spammers who

Received by e-mail and posted anonymized by the sysadmin: ... posting a message, I had an awesome wait for the name list to be able to scroll, and could not just enter the name , and go straight to it. I know this may be due to a slow computer, but nothing else is anywhere near that slow. I found, eventually, that person's message box was full.

You have two different search boxes on the search page. One says "Search messages" and the other says "Search authors". You probably used the former. If you search for the username that you mailed me with the "Search authors" field, you will get lots of results. Also pay attention to the search delimiters. By default, a search will only look for postings in the p

Please read the instructions in the sticky posting titled "How to use this forum", in particular the part about being very, very specific and the part about being fanatically pedantically specific. You don't say how you tried, nor what problem you run into. The way to change e-mail address is to log in, then click on "My Control Center" at the top right corner, click "Edit Email Settings" on the left, change the e-mail address in the box and click submit. A verification e-mail will be sent to the new address, containing a verification code. Copy/paste that code
