I thought I had posted this before but cannot find it. A student at my alma mater was blogging about his hot yoga "journey" and throughout the entries, he made mention of his declining use of water in class. His instructor was teaching some pretty hardcore mind-over-matter stuff about how people psych themselves up to believe they need things - including water in hot yoga classes.

Define lazy or explain why you think you're lazy, please. I have the sneaking suspicion you are not. Why not volunteer for a nonprofit? Remember, many of the people you met at Landmark are trying to comply to Landmark's rules and not necessarily trying to support you in getting your life together. They just don't want to be humiliated by Landmark if they get caught thinking

Good Enough, Great stuff. I've been reading about placebo effect on sciencebasedmedicine.org. The National Committee on Complementary and Alternative Medicine is spinning the poor outcomes of their tax-payer funded research as "The Power of Placebo" and people are falling for it. Health and lifestyle coaches, naturopaths, armchair nutritionists on health forums have thinly

My former yoga instructor didn't start preaching and holding Sunday kirtans while she was renting space in a church to hold classes. When she opened her own studio, everything went to hell in a handbasket. I dropped out, tired of her preaching and pseudopsychoanalysis. The dangerous thing she did, IMO, was suggest that fear of doing certain poses or not wanting to "go past your edge&

She's going to use mind-fvcking techniques on you and your husband if she is up to her eyeballs in Landmark. You might feel some relief and empowerment, but it will all be manipulated. She'll ignore true issues by blaming every last thing on rackets, integrity, responsibility (Landmark's version where you're responsible for everything), and you trying to look good. Been the

My feeling is that most professionals don't know the extent of infiltration by Byron Katie and her wannabes. More and more universities and teaching hospitals are offering integrative therapies (read - unvalidated) training. NCCAM (Natl Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) is spending billions of taxpayers' dollars to carry out poorly designed studies and promote woo

Dr. Monasterio, Thank you for posting your review of A Thousand Names for Joy here. It is so important that professionals speak up and explain to people what kind of wool Katie is actually pulling over the eyes of unsuspecting readers and clients. So many untrained "therapists" are ripping off vulnerable people and doing a lot of harm in the process (see post about one grad of

While there are likely many, many people who decide to forego conventional medical treatment for serious diseases and instead turn to “woo”, there still is little to suggest that Steve Jobs hastened his demise by “turning to alternatives” for nine months. Both sides of the treatment aisle are enjoying the spotlight, with alties exclaiming that chemo killed Jobs and mainstream pointing the fing

Does anyone have any resources for people who survive and get out of abusive relationships? An acquaintance of mine is a woman who was beaten down, physically, sexually, emotionally and spiritually for many years. She was formerly a high-level IT professional for NASA, but now has a five-year gap in her resume due to abuse. She is still struggling with self-confidence (she has to attend court-

Penelope, I'm experiencing the same BS in a program that is supposed to be "science-based". It started off based in basic science but then the woo slowly crept in. This program has infiltrated its way into Harvard Med School, which, of course, to the program facilitators means it is credible. Unfortunately, referring clients to LGATS or reading material penned by the likes of Byron Katie and Ekart Tolle is rampant. The therapist I went to in the aftermath of my Landmarkian doctor was an est grad (she later posted this information on her website as part of her CV) and the first reading material she gave me was BK. At the time, I did not know how pervasive LGATs were and thought my expe
