Personally, I don't think applying theology here is appropriate. (I'm not saying people shouldn't express views but rather that it's not going to work). That's fine say within a specific church or even within a group of churches whereby the membership and leaders are broadly in agreement on theology and interpretation and how it's applied. This forum is a mix

Welcome basilisk. I mean, that's a wild curveball you've thrown there. A total guess, a complete shot in the dark. I think it's FAR more likely that the BBC are interested in the actual story, ie, how people have been mistreated and mishandled by their fellow humans, purporting to be loving and caring. The world of documentary-making is awash with this kind of thing. The fact

Some really good and interesting contributions of late. Falkirkbairn - I would like to add my comments to those that have already thanked you for sharing. I'm sorry that you have been so deeply and profoundly affected. I'm sure there's nothing any of us can say or do to offer you any real comfort but please know that in speaking out, you can massively help others. TheGreek has

If you're deluded enough to believe that you are 'anointed' and that your job is tell others how to live their lives then a little bit of BBC intrusion is unlikely to cause much in the way of alarm. Why? Because the delusion protects your mind from facing the reality of it. These people are at best delusional and at worst, deliberately manipulating people. The 'dancing in

On a slightly more whimsical note, can we talk about the struthers "prayer voice"? Some must surely know what I mean - that put on, weird voice that is reserved soley for the purpose of praying in public. Presumably when you do this, it makes it a little bit more holy or something?

Rainbow: "It is now time. I do think we are past the stage of amends being made. Each individual that is part of the ‘struthers’ movement has had their chance to talk it out and apologise. It is now time for the truth to come out." This is it in a nutshell. Absolutely spot on.

Just to clarify my comment about this being "one big rant". The point that I was trying to make is this: in order to be able to dismiss it and not take it seriously, that is likely how SMC and their apologisers see it. It's far easier to do that than actually face what is said here face on. If the leaders were the 'real deal' and genuinely cared for people, that's ex

It may be the case that if the BBC are following certain guidelines, they've already contacted SMC directly. It's near impossible to do these things without it getting out in any case.

Rainbow - I totally get where you're coming from. From the perspective of Struthers though, this is all one big rant. But to all those that have been genuinely affected / impacted it's a serious, serious matter indeed. One thing that may come out of this is potential legal issues as per previous discussions on this thread. If the BBC do indeed follow through with an investigation and

Hi Rainbow - seems our posts just crossed! I agree broadly with the sentiment of what you're saying. What I would say to you is (and I hope this doesn't sound trite) - you have nothing to be afraid of. No-one is going to harm you. Let the truth and the facts speak for themselves and if others do the same, then that's plenty.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, personally I would rather it's the BBC than The Sun! If you are willing to speak to them, but stay anonymous, they would absolutely honour that. On a personal level, perhaps it would help bring you a proper conclusion / closure? You've asked for thoughts. Personally, I think it can only be a good thing if it exposes what's happened, bring

Hi Rainbow, Yes, that's genuine. Mark Daily is fairly prolific investigative journalist with the BBC. He's made some pretty hard-hitting documentaries if I remember correctly. Presumably the person that's contacted you is a colleague. With a thread that spans 14 years, 175 pages and half a million views, I'm not surprised it's come to this.

Welcome FalkirkBairn. I hope you find you're able to share your story in time and in turn, get some relief from doing so. Just picking up on some wider points: Members of SMC (and indeed other organisation like it) are the ones that empower the leaders. Without them subordinating themselves, the leaders have no power. Personally I don't believe for a second that they have any

Rainbow, I'm genuinely sorry and saddened to hear that you went through that. Interesting that you preface it with "I’m not bitter as I have some good memories". This type of comment is very common amongst 'survivors'. Even in the recent Netflix documentary about 'bootcamp' schools in america in which students were horrendously treated, similar comments are m

Really enjoyed reading recent posts. Very much enjoyed your witchy imagery Al! Spiritual dwarfs, the death stare, leaders somehow "knowing" all your sins, witches caught in the act, illicit hair dye. That's some of the latest highlights for anyone unable to read it all. What an absolute bucket of horse-dung. This is what happens when otherwise wholly unremarkable people are allo

Someone else mentioned about the potential for a documentary. I have to say I agree with this - the whole thing is ripe for the picking. The history, the entire backstory - the endless catalog of hurt and failure - the separation - the bizarre teaching - the hypocrisy - financial scandal - the school. There's plenty of material there for a pretty compelling piece - especially in the current

Al Duff, Agree with your comments re Alison Speirs (incidentally - another one fairly fond of a pie or two whilst preaching moderation and sin in other people). The name of the school grates with me to this today. It is, as you say, pompous and irritating. I suspect re the treatment of your wife, a certain other-worldly place of eternal torture shall surely freeze over before you receiv

That's the difference though Rainbow - you're able to look at yourself and hold your hands up to things you've said and done in the past. Isn't that what most of us do? We learn and grow and develop and move on and with a little humility, admit our mistakes. I would say however that it's clear from your posts that you were young and impressionable. It's ok to give

Al Duff - thank you for your insight and observations. I can't dismiss your personal experience but I do disagree wholeheartedly with the view that Miss Taylor was 'gifted'. Well, not in any 'supernatural' sense. Where she most certainly was gifted was in how to influence people. It is simply not possible, in my view, to claim that the leaders had any sort of special v

As I said in a previous post, people that want to control and manipulate others are rarely doing as they say themselves. We've seen this time and time again throughout history. Be suspicious of ANYONE who wants to be a leader in this context. The way in which the church operates and controls its members is not in any way unique to Struthers. This type of operation is well documented and t

Rensil - thanks for your comprehensive update. Here's a question for you (and others). I often wondered how Chris Jewell seemed to be able / permitted to operate in 'both worlds'? He'll attend secular events / functions and in general does a fair bit of mingling with non-christians. Obviously he's a big financial steer in the organisation and wonder if that buys him a
