Trace the source of that image and see if it illustrates events took place in the area being discussed---or whether the photograph was taken in another part of the world.

A citizen journalist advised that when vetting online sources, use Google Image and search the original source and history of use for any photo or video cited as evidence. She told me how a photograph presented as evidence of atrocity in one part of the world was actually filmed in another nation, and when she politely and firmly pointed this out after doing a google search, that image was withdrawn.

A photograph presented as a primary source, especially one that becomes famous, should always be investigated to make sure it is indeed a primary source.

A friend stated that the Islamists and Hamas Palestinians are much more adept at use of social media than friends of Israel in the US.

If photos are used to inflame emotions, fact check them, just as we've learned over the years via other threads on Culteducation that the word guru should be synonymous with 'fact check'.

How to fact check a photograph.

One might protest, saying this tutorial is from a politicized source. can use this information for any project one is working on.

There is Another War going on. The war we speak of is in the world of social media. This is where we have people posting past images as if they are current. We cannot be posting these images, the truth is the only way and we promise you that the photos will be reported as past events. We cannot stoop to their level and must maintain honesty, it is our greatest weapon.

Here Is How To Check If A Photo Is Current Or Not:

Hover over the image with your mouse

Right Click ON the image

Click Copy Image URL

Go to and click on Images

Click on the little Camera icon in the search box

Paste the URL we copied from the image

Click Search

See if any articles come up in the results from before this week.

If they do then DO NOT POST THE IMAGE and alert whomever posted it that it is an old image and should be taken down.

Here is an example that circulated the social media until the photographer cried foul. Fake Syria Orphan Photo

Some photos are just ripped off 'Google image' and given false captions and others are staged. is also another place to fact check stories and photos.

I was shown this series of photos of a boy being punished for stealing bread. They ran over his arm with a truck. I was suspicious and looked it up on Snopes. It turned out to be a stunt and nothing to do with Islamic justice.

Faked Islamic Justice

Honest Reporting has been uncovering photo bias and 'Pallywood' propaganda for years.

Media and Photo Bias

Media and Photo Bias continued:

The advent of the internet and new technologies has created extraordinary ways of disseminating disinformation and propaganda. Here is an example from the second "intifada" (Islamic term) against Israel. The Photo that Started it All

When I first saw this photograph, I was horrified and shocked that a little Arab boy was shot and died in his father's arms in the crossfire between Israelis and Palestinians. It turns out it was faked.

What Really Happened at Al Dura?

Hundreds of fake images have been used and misused for years by mainstream media outlets such as Reuters, AP, BBC, CNN, PBS, New York Times, and so on...disseminating the Islamic propaganda.
Because we are at odds with such cheap, easy, and extraordinary technologies that batter our senses and emotions, we need to be extra vigilant in discerning truth from lies. Some lies and rumors come from seemingly reliable sources, even innocent ones.

I wish Margaret Singer was still around. She would be astounded by today's media and rise of Islam.

Margaret Thaler Singer, PhD
We live in the most rapidly changing and complex environment that has ever existed. To cope daily with many and complex social judgments, we often rely on automatic, learned responses. However, because no one person has the knowledge and experience to deal with every decision that arises we allow our behavior to be influenced at times by others and by what is happening around us. Since we are social creatures - born dependent on others, living our lives, interacting with others, we are prepared for group living by learning the language, demeanor, beliefs, attitudes, cultural norms, and social values of those around us.
Compliance is produced by 3 general methods of persuasion: reason, coercion or subterfuge - used singly or in various combinations, and these can be roughly arranged on an imaginary continuum. At the left end are those efforts to persuade that are characterized by reason and open exchange in which each side looks at all the evidence and attempts to persuade the other. This is the approved method in a democratic society.

Moving across the continuum, varying amounts of pressure are applied by the persuader to have his opinion prevail (e.g. forms of advertising are followed by propaganda). At the far right end of the continuum would be placed fascism in Germany and Italy under Hitler and Mussolini and in the USA, the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi organizations. Here also are the cultic groups in which the persuader resorts to social, psychologic or physical coercion. Since coercive methods make the process of persuasion obvious, subterfuge often is used. The persuader tries to keep his subject unaware of the intention to elicit compliance and less than fully aware of being moved along a preplanned course of action.

Is this truth or propaganda? Hard to tell. She doesn't look like a 10 year old girl. Girls are rarely used for suicide missions, but it has happened before. Karzai says it's not Islamic. Who does this story serve? Is she making this story up to escape a different situation? Stories like this are difficult to verify.

Amazing interview with a former Islamic terrorist who explains how he became unduly influenced by jihadists. It is the same pattern you hear over and over again from former cult members who have escaped.

It is interesting that he was taught that the first enemy was not the "West" or the Jews, but women's rights. This is also a theme in many other religious cults who get women to cover up and take subservient or demeaning roles. Often they turn a blind eye to both child abuse and misogynist behaviors they would have previously thought abhorrent and loathsome.

He speaks about the events that caused him to say this is not what I should be doing.

Honor killings are on the rise, according to some reports. Last year, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan found that at least 943 women were killed “in the name of honor” in 2011, up by 100 from the total in 2010. Other reports claim that there are over a thousand a year in Pakistan alone. Most of the killers are set free.

Women who are raped are routinely "honor" killed. They consider it the woman's fault and according to Sharia law she is only innocent if 4 other men testify who witnessed the rape. WTF!?

The following video created a flurry of protests - only because it was caught on camera...

The shocking video purportedly shows a suspected member of the Taliban firing nine shots into a woman accused of adultery, killing her, while a crowd cheers.

The three-minute amateur video, obtained by Reuters, reportedly shows the burqa-clad woman on her knees as a man carrying an automatic rifle approaches her. He fires at close range while approximately a hundred men cheer and shout “God is great”.

Afghan officials believe that the woman, thought to be named Najibia, was subjected to the horrific execution because she was married to one Taliban commander while having an affair with another, Al Jazeera reports. [yeah...Al Jazeera Islamic Apologist news agency says...]

“Allah warns us not to get close to adultery because it's the wrong way,” another man says as the shooter approaches the woman in the video. “It is the order of Allah that she be executed.”

A bearded man is shown reading passages from the Koran that condemn adultery and ends his speech by reportedly saying, “We cannot forgive her, God tells us to finish her. Juma Khan, her husband, has the right to kill her.”

"The Most Toxic Belief System in the World"

Decades ago, when I was in high school, I first heard about these so called honor killings.

I remember thinking to myself, "If honor is so important, important matter, it should be made as difficult as possible to prove loss of honor.

If honor is of the utmost importance, a matter of life and death, and it is made easy to lose honor due to an innocent mishap or malicious rumor, that is a recipe for a bitter, fearful society."

All the items listed by Vera illustrate what Professor Steve Dutch has termed the most toxic belief system in the world --what Professor Dutch termed 'thar'.

Karl Popper made a distinction between open societies and closed societies -- and he regarded closed societies as manifestations of tribalism -- and thar is one type of tribal society, in which the penalties are especially harsh on girls and women.

We are in a world where old certainties are under pressure from new ideas -- and entertainment.

The thar mentality reacts by demonizing females and out-groups.

But that is no remedy for a society already set up for anxiety and bitterness.
