Trace the source of that image and see if it illustrates events took place in the area being discussed---or whether the photograph was taken in another part of the world.


A citizen journalist advised that when vetting online sources, use Google Image and search the original source and history of use for any photo or video cited as evidence. She told me how a photograph presented as evidence of atrocity in one part of the world was actually filmed in another nation, and when she politely and firmly pointed this out after doing a google search, that image was withdrawn.

A photograph presented as a primary source, especially one that becomes famous, should always be investigated to make sure it is indeed a primary source.

Here is an example that circulated the social media until the photographer cried foul. Fake Syria Orphan Photo

Some photos are just ripped off 'Google image' and given false captions and others are staged.

Snopes.com is also another place to fact check stories and photos.

I was shown this series of photos of a boy being punished for stealing bread. They ran over his arm with a truck. I was suspicious and looked it up on Snopes. It turned out to be a stunt and nothing to do with Islamic justice.

Compliance is produced by 3 general methods of persuasion: reason, coercion or subterfuge - used singly or in various combinations, and these can be roughly arranged on an imaginary continuum. At the left end are those efforts to persuade that are characterized by reason and open exchange in which each side looks at all the evidence and attempts to persuade the other. This is the approved method in a democratic society.

Moving across the continuum, varying amounts of pressure are applied by the persuader to have his opinion prevail (e.g. forms of advertising are followed by propaganda). At the far right end of the continuum would be placed fascism in Germany and Italy under Hitler and Mussolini and in the USA, the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi organizations. Here also are the cultic groups in which the persuader resorts to social, psychologic or physical coercion. Since coercive methods make the process of persuasion obvious, subterfuge often is used. The persuader tries to keep his subject unaware of the intention to elicit compliance and less than fully aware of being moved along a preplanned course of action.

Is this truth or propaganda? Hard to tell. She doesn't look like a 10 year old girl. Girls are rarely used for suicide missions, but it has happened before. Karzai says it's not Islamic. Who does this story serve? Is she making this story up to escape a different situation? Stories like this are difficult to verify.

It is interesting that he was taught that the first enemy was not the "West" or the Jews, but women's rights. A bearded man is shown reading passages from the Koran that condemn adultery and ends his speech by reportedly saying, “We cannot forgive her, God tells us to finish her. Juma Khan, her husband, has the right to kill her.”
