I strongly recommend the book "The Guru Papers: Masks of Authoritarian Power" by Joel Kramer and Diana Alstead. It helped me a lot in recovering from an experience with a narcissistic guru. And it really goes into the deep dynamics of why a person might mistrust themselves enough in the first place to be vulnerable to psychological manipulation, and how to rebuild self trust after it has been lost. Ties together some very deep ideas about human nature that show how authoritarianism isn't just a strategy of abuse used by a minority of evildoers, but a strong and pernicious influence in our collective psyche.
