My sister is married to Vere Thomas' son, Bruce. As a result, I've heard Vere's version of John's last days before he died. Vere also passed away a few years ago. Some posting here may know that John asked to see Vere many times in his last days, but G & M would not allow it. Finally, when Vere was allowed to see John, he was not allowed to be alone with him. Some thought this was because John might give Vere a leadership role, since they had been close since the early days. Vere was concerned about the way G & M were constantly huddled off together and thought their relationship was very inappropriate. There was obviously some future planning going on, even though they were both married to someone else at the time. Vere was sent out of the country, and when he returned was stripped of everything he had built in Des Moines, including a house that had been given to him personally by one of the members. He moved back to Hawaii with nothing.

light777,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. You know, since leaving TLWF I've had more time to read and watch works of historical fiction. Nothing reminded me so much of the inner workings of the LW as literature depicting the royal court of King Henry VIII of England. The control, the intrigue, the affairs and lavish lifestyle. Most of all, the murder of wives who had become tiresome or inconvenient. The beheading of political enemies. Granted, there were no literal murders or beheadings. But people who had once been essential to the leaders could be ushered from the fellowship and seemingly "disappeared" at the drop of a hat. To top it off, they were given the illustrious title of "nephilim" and placed under a shunning order.

I like your list of adjectives, and I will add: SICKENING. I hate to disappoint anyone reading this thread who feels invincible to the capricious moods of GH, but you are not indipensable. At all. Just stop being a sychophant for a few days or weeks. Speak up once or twice, or even ask a question about the party line. You will see the other side of the boot you've been licking PDQ.

You asked, “What did any of this have to do with God?” NOTHING.

Larry, This perfectly illustrates my point in the previous conversation. Vere Thomas seemed like a good shepherd and a good man, from my perspective. Certainly he could have been shown the courtesy of having some time with his friend. I would take the word of Vere Thomas regarding what was going on at Kling Street over the word of G&M any day. They used deceptive strategies with several long-time APCO level pastors. Many ended up with nothing after years of faithful service. Their places were filled with younger ministries who didn't know any better. But many of those very same "younger ministries" are now old and have been on the other side of the axe.

When I watched the mini-series “The Tudors”, all I could think was “gosh, that’s Rick Holbrook”.

I didn't see much of the behind the scenes or "in the bedroom" as JRS was dying but I too believe Vere Thomas. I was next door in the office handling the admin side of everything. But it's interesting to see how many people who were there in the bedroom where JRS was living his final months, have been kicked out, sent away, and generally ostracized. Hey Rick, G&M - Feel threatened much? If the truth can destroy you then it certainly should do just that.

And there were deceptive strategies used as JRS lay dying, just after he died, and every day since then. The axe continued and continues to fall on so many faithful ministries and people who intended to serve.

And amen to Puddington - the Tudors is Rick Holbrook in all its/his stark and disgusting reality.

I had a positive impression of Vere as well. I spoke to him briefly a few times in the late 70's, and recall that he seemed very straightforward, lacking duplicity. Of course, today I know possessing those qualities within TLWF mean you will likely be preyed upon by the 'royal family.'
What a wonderful, magical place :)

When JRS died and I saw what was happening with G&M, I remember thinking that JRS wouldn't approve. That G&M got this all wrong. I could envision JRS saying to Gary to take care of Marilyn in an orphans and widows kind of way, and Gary just misinterpreted what JRS wanted. Oh, so naive!

Something else that struck me is when I got an email that Marilyn had died. I read it and felt absolutely no emotion at all whatsoever. For 7 of my 10 years in TLW, I was directly responsible to Morene and Marilyn. For all intents and purposes, they were my pastors, and I was at their beck and call. I'm only realizing now, I actually had no real relationship with either of them.
