David---
I lost contact with the Assembly in 1980 when I left,
but much of what you wrote was true of me also. I always
knew something was wrong. Something always felt off-
base about the Assembly. The rampant legalism, and the
group's elitism were sure signs of aberrant teaching. I always
remember that verse where Paul says "Why do you say
I am of Appollos, or I am of Cephas, or I am of Christ"? The Assembly was saying "We are of Christ" in an elitist way, just
as Paul was pointing out. It is spiritual pride, stating that "we
have light that others do not". The teaching of the "inheritance"
is perhaps the most damaging of all--instilling a fear that Christ
just might "cut you off". They often spoke of "commitment"--but
commitment to what?? Is constantly attending meetings, and
going to church all day, and praying all night really commitment??
As Jesus said to Martha "Martha, Martha, you labor much, but Mary has found that better place" as Mary sat at the feet of Christ. I'll write more later--it's strange recalling living in the Assembly after all of these years. --Joe
