Rolfing was popular in the wacky who-am-I 1970s and often is linked to other emotionally intense therapies such as primal scream therapy and Werner Erhard's est training.
In est (which means "to be" in Latin), a group awareness training program, people were taught to "get It," often using a Zen master approach that was abusive, profane, demeaning and authoritarian. For example, participants were not allowed to leave the room during training, even to go to the toilet.
