I'll quote Harry Rosenberg again:
Quote

In the United States, we have altered the public conversation about our workand our enterprise. For example, it is no longer possible for informed people or publications to pin pejorative labels on us.
In the anti-cult world there's no question where Landmark and Erhard stand. However, in the rest of the world I'd say Rosenberg is right and, for now anyway, Landmark has won this battle.

If one wants to be persuasive, I'd recommend honing arguments to best Landmark's rather than assuming that everyone already knows that Landmark is a cult. They don't.

Doesn't seem to matter to some people how many times the evidence has been recounted, how many testimonies given, how many personal horror stories come out, how high the mountain of information is, how many bodies have piled up, or how many scholarly and forensic studies are published, there are always people willing to shut their eyes and cover their ears. Like you, for instance. Landmark, and all the other copy-cats, have made lots and lots of money because this is so. They are thrilled there are still people like you. You are sadly deluded and an involvement with Landmark will amplify that into a psychotic depression if you give them a chance. (And they will blame it on you and you will probably agree because the depressed usually over-estimate their own contribution to their problems.)

I've been through the web pretty thoroughly about Landmark and cult issues. There is little that Elena or anyone can post here that I haven't seen before. And I've recently argued that Landmark is a cult in a pro-Landmark group, so I know the definitions and arguments quite well.

So please give up the idea that I'm naive or uninformed. It would be nice too if people gave up the mindreading and ad hominems. I got plenty enough of that in the Landmark group already, thank you.

No, I'm not some weird Landmark undercover guy. I did est twenty-odd years ago, and I did the Forum and the Advanced Course recently. I was impressed by that Landmark can still pack a surprising punch. And yes, I liked what I saw enough to sign up for the SELP course in January.

However, I'm bothered by the Landmark manipulations so I hold back. In the online Landmark group I spoke about the cult issue partly because I find it interesting and partly because I wanted to see if it were possible to dissent publicly on a key Landmark issue. I got the usual deflection counterattacks which set off my internal alarms.

I came to this group because I was excited by Guy's and gc's posts in particular and some of the others. However, except for gc, I don't notice much room for dissent in this group either.

JackSF ponders:

>>I came to this group because I was excited by Guy's and gc's posts in particular and some of the others. However, except for gc, I don't notice much room for dissent in this group either.>>

Who's stopping you? Or hindering your dissent? What IS your point, anyway?

"Cult," "cult-like," "sorta like a cult," "does some of the same things cults do," "employs cult-type mind control," "acts like a cult"???

So what? No cult member thinks he is one. Go ahead, give them your money. Who's to say? There may be some people who are improved by a trip through cult land. You may be one of them.

The issue of Landmark being called a "cult" is really something of a "straw man" argument.

Experts have said repeatedly that Landmark is not a cult. Note Lifton's basic definition in "Cult Formation."

See [www.culteducation.com]

Landmark lacks "a charismatic leader who increasingly becomes an object of worship," Jack Rosenberg aka Werner Erhard is off in the Caymans with his girlfriend.

Only through a broader more general definition could Landmark be called a "cult."

See [www.culteducation.com]

What causes so many people to see landmark as a "cult" or "cult-like" is its seminar structure and dynamics, which easily fits within the context of what Lifton calls "thought reform."

See [www.culteducation.com]

This is the destructive element of the group and also the seemingly essential core of its success.

rrmoderator, gc4602 -- Thanks for the substantive posts.

elena -- To me room for dissent in an online group means being able to post views different from the group yet respectful without being harassed with ad hominems, mindreading, sarcasm etc. Yes, I can continue to post here--as I can in the Landmark group--but past a certain point what's the point. When I see people routinely respond to disagreement with abuse, while others sit on their hands, I see it as another groupthink, cult-like environment. It's not attractive. Except for gc, I'm not being treated any differently here than I was by the Landmark group except that the Landmark group was more polite.

You ask, what's my point? As I've said more than once, Landmark doesn't like to be called a cult, yet they are vulnerable on this point. They have worked very hard, primarily through lawsuits, to avoid this. My suggestion to people on this board is that they continue to hammer on the cult issue, but do it intelligently, in terms of existing definitions and Landmark's attempts to sidestep them.

>What used to drive the powers that be the most insane when I was on
>staff is that my opinions/thoughts/beliefs/values cover a very wide
>spectrum

gc -- You are a man after my own heart. I will read anything you post on Landmark avidly.

My position on Landmark has shifted due to what I've read here and in the pro-Landmark group. I'm still not sure how I'll handle SELP next month. If there is an "opportunity to leaven" I may well take it.
