I read the repost of Rick Lewis's letter and took some time to think about it and go to the authority on how I should react. Matthew 18 was the first thing that popped into my mind: 21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" 22 Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." I choose not to act as an Unmerciful Servant of the Lord and answer for my inability or unwillingness to forgive. Then I moved on to Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven." and the list could go on and on. I cannot tell others what they should do. My family has to make the choice of what to do and then act on that choice. Our choice is from Joshua 24; 14"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." That means listening for God's still small voice, reading God's Word, and following the way the Lord would have us go.
I choose to forgive Rick Lewis. He got sucked up the same way many of us did. Ricks failure to stand up to Mike and leave TPC at the same time we did is irrelevant. I do not want God to hold my sin against me for failing to forgive a brother who is humbling himself, confessing his sin, and asking for forgiveness.
