It is curious that the defense didn't use a character witness. Either they couldn't find anyone prepared to vouch, or they didn't want the jury to even begin to contemplate Ray's character.

I saw a comment on twitter suggesting Bob Procter is just trying to get his hands on Ray's mailing list.

'I saw a comment on twitter suggesting Bob Procter is just trying to get his hands on Ray's mailing list.'

I should imagine that there are quite a few sharks circling now in the hope of snaffling his list of confirmed buyers for a song in a 'fire sale,' certainly more than have spoken up for him, as a buddy, during this lengthy process.

I look forward to the prospective fire sale---and hope that the confirmed buyers might reconsider their investment in this rubbish.

Well, the case is over, the jury is deliberating.

Sheila Polk made a masterfully clear rebuttal to the defense marathon of obfuscation and confusion.

Mr Droid has summarised that rebuttal as it happened here:

And today, yet another demand from the defence for a mistrial--I've long since lost count:

Now, let us hope the judge understands what kind of person this is.

He cannot be exposed to impressionable persons--either prisoners or guards.

He should not be permitted to 'help the chaplain'.

His correspondance must be vetted. Many prisoners try to charm enablers through letter writing.

And friends, this is more than a matter of being punitive. We are dealing with a man who, through his actions, as described in court, through legally admissible evidence, has lost his right to live an autonomous, unsupervised life.

(Expletive deleted)

Ray remains free on bail.

(Returning to main point)

This verdict is important enough that it should be reported on the national news.

And we can only hope that the other self help profiteers are having a nice 'sweat' about the implications of all this.

AZ Central got it right.

Family and friends of the victims said they hope the verdict, in Yavapai County Superior Court, will serve notice to leaders in the largely unregulated self-help industry that they will be held accountable when their actions harm others.

Several participants said they hope the verdict sends a broader message.

"This is about more than one man's actions on one day," McFeeley said. "The self-help industry is a huge industry, and it needs watching."

McFeeley said the Brown family is launching a non-profit organization to educate people about the self-help industry and what questions they should ask.

"If you're a provider in the self-help industry and you're convincing people to follow you and to trust you and to be vulnerable with you, and you lead them into harm's way, you're now going to be held accountable in a court of law," said Shawna Bowen, a Sedona-area therapist and author of a book, "Never Again," about the sweat-lodge deaths.
