Daedone sold her stake in the (OneTaste) company in 2017 for $12 million — a year before OneTaste’s marketing and labor practices came under scrutiny.

The company’s current owners, who have rebranded it the Institute of OM Foundation, have said its work has been misconstrued and the charges against its former executives were unjustified.

They maintain sexual consent has always been a cornerstone of the organization. The company didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Talking about the time he spent with OneTaste, Ruwan realises how warped the environment had been. Although he’s aware he was used as a young man to entice older women to spend money at OneTaste, he’s keen to point out he was not the most exploited.

‘Nicole re-purposed the term “Aversion Therapy” as an extreme form of “doing uncomfortable things to help you grow as a person”. In practice this sometimes looked like women being encouraged to sleep with a man who repulsed her as proof they were so developed that they could “open their hearts” and orgasm with anyone.

‘Some female staff members would be encouraged to “love up” certain men with the understanding that this would lead to them spending money at OneTaste. In this case, it was framed as “bringing people to orgasm” as a spiritual practice,’ he explains.

In October, we wrote about another organization that was founded by Nicole Daedone, Unconditional Freedom. The non-profit was operating in the Mendocino County Jail and Juvenile Hall, claiming to offer a restorative justice curriculum called Prison Monastery to inmates. We reported that all the Unconditional Freedom personnel involved in the program were also affiliated with OneTaste. At least one of the volunteers, Rachel Hemsi, was also listed as Director of The Land, a retreat center in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. The Land’s website still offers visitors the opportunity to donate to Unconditional Freedom. Cherwitz was arrested at The Land at around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Mendocino County Sheriff Matthew Kendall terminated the relationship with Unconditional Freedom during the course of our reporting.

It is part of Unconditional Freedom’s Turning Prisons into Monasteries program, which aims to restore jails as a place of contribution and growth.

The chicken coop is just a portion of the programs Unconditional Freedom is helping create at the prison. Before the coop-building project, the nonprofit and jail worked together to implement a gardening program and beekeeping project at the prison.

Now they are working on getting inmates certifications in a variety of fields including agriculture, culinary arts and animal husbandry, according to Marissa Ward, Unconditional Freedom’s program manager.

“Coercion disguised as wellness or empowerment is still exploitation and it is a crime that causes harm to vulnerable victims,” Joseph Nocella, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York said in a statement.

Daedone declined to speak in federal court in Brooklyn on Monday, but one victim told the judge that she had believed in Daedone's “so-called feminist mission” only to be “left with significant financial damages and emotional harm,” the Daily News reports.
