The Chris Butler group entered our lives as I wrote as Siddha and Tusta in 1974/5 in New Zealand. They had a charisma then, so where did it take them? Your forum has unearthed some info on their fate.
They had 200 people turning up on their Sunday feasts in NZ to sing and dance whilst Iskcon had only 10. Chris Butler's group were called "The Haribols" by Iskcon devotees.
I found this forum because I, like most others here have wondered what happened to them? It is easy to see what happened to Iskcon. But what happened to all those who spent time with CB? In this age of internet information I was surprised that your forum has the most up to date info. He is obviously not interested in fame.
It is like completing a puzzle, or visiting an old house you lived in 20 years ago. Something is put to rest. So I learn that Chris Butler eventually found a girl and got married, OK. Understanding this person and the people attracted and how they "end-up" helps me as a parent and grandparent to guide those close to me now.

How can I find this video. Need help to convince my daughter, who is home and a mess after 5 years of living in one of their communes? I need what ever I can find and I am not finding a lot. A desperate mother. suziQuote

I found the video tape of Chris Butler preaching to his devotees absolutely disgusting. He was so arrogant, condescending, judgemental, even anti-Christian, that I found it hard to believe this quiet, seemingly kind man who was my meditation teacher would listen to a word he said (little did I know at the time about mind control). When the camera panned the audience, there was my teacher, obviously many years younger, meaning he had been a devotee for quite a while.
The teacher wasn't living an ascetic's life ,but he wasn't well off. Chris Butler, however, lives in a mansion while his devotees work for nothing in their communities. For several weeks, I was the only person in the class, and he was paying to rent the room we used, and not asking for money. Nice set of double standards.

I am one of Jagad Guru's original initiated diciples. I was with his group for 12 years from the age of 19 to 31. I notice that this post is 2 years old. If anyone still has questions, I will be happy to answer. There are many misconceptions as well as some truths in these posts. I know who was really there. I kept a lot of letters, photographs, recordings, writings and documentation for years. I regret throwing it all away when I returned to my Jewish roots. So now much of what I tell is heresay unless confirmed by other sources. I've often thought of writing a book.
If Malika is still looking for stories about her father, Bruce Butler, I knew him.
Guru (Chris Butler) My daughter is home after 5 years in a California ashram, followers of Butler. She is a mess and we need to know what we are dealing with. Please share your story. suzi

about the person they call Siddhaswarupananda
(now promoted from mere swami to paramahamsa)
and his Californian extravaganza.
Here's one: you could work as his unpaid limo driver
But you'd have to survive as a dumpster diver!
And if stories like this are starting to annoy ya
We also have tales of extreme paranoia
and people donating their lives - living in poverty
with stars in their eyes - almost like a zombie?
As for myself - I got kinda weary
of incessant condemnation and conspiracy theory.
And if this person represents the Supreme
Yet acts so demanding, uncaring, selfish, paranoid and mean
and if the Supreme Person is somewhat the same
Then maybe I'd prefer not to enter HIS domain
By incessantly chanting HIS holy name!
So if you know someone who is acting kinda odd
talks about nothing except reincarnation and God
and almost losing touch with reality
going on and on about homosexuality
teaching everyone about mantra meditation
and eating fruit to counteract constipation
and chanting and dancing like the rhumba or the samba
they may be a follower of Siddhaswarupananda!
