What has become of all of these beautiful children? I would love to give them a forum to speak freely about their upbringing. Hopefully they can post here anonymously as Flash has encouraged. Can they overcome the indoctrination and false idealism of their parents and the cult? Who among them is courageous enough or able to speak the truth?
I am reminded of the disease of diabetes which is often called the "silent killer". Most people who develop Type 2 diabetes (adolescent or adult onset) do not even know they have had it for years. By the time you find out, damage to small blood vessels and internal organs has already occurred. If you don't make drastic life style changes, it will kill you slowly and painfully. Even the insulin treatment causes damages while keeping you alive. Similarly, you don't know you are in a cult until you see dramatic symptoms, usually by then it is too late to reverse the damages. I know that all of the people who still identify with the Butler group do not think they are in a cult.
Often times diabetes does not get diagnosed as it can disguise itself as other diseases such as heart disease, impotence, obesity, depression, mental problems, blindness, circulatory disorders, etc. Similarly, the cause of damages incurred by the cult are not recognized, even after severe symptoms occur. In the mind of the devotee, the cult remains blameless as disorders present themselves.
Diabetics are famously in denial and experts at rationalization and excuse making. Similarly, cult families are also experts at denial and apologetics. They sincerely believe the lies they propagate. They no longer have the capacity to distinguish between a lie and the truth. They no longer have the conscious ability to objectively look at the truth. Diabetes causes a lack of blood flow to an area of the body (including the brain) which creates atrophy and rot. A diabetic can no longer feel their extremities. A cult member loses the ability to know when they are in danger and loses the capacity to think critically. They live crippled lives, never accomplishing their full potential or if their potential is used fully for their guru, it is lost to a falsehood. One of the most painful complaints of exers on this forum is the time they lost in the cult. Another complaint was losing the ability to appreciate and being thankful for a basic "joie de vivre" outside of the cult's suffocating boundaries.
Sadly, if a young cult member develops a drug problem, he can't get the help he needs because getting to the root cause (for example the suppression of critical thinking or parental neglect due to the cult) he will need to view the cult with a critical eye. The price to pay for that is often too much to sustain. He also lives with the specter of failure, of feeling not being good or pure enough (even though he spent a lifetime chanting, eating prasadam, living the regulative principals). They live in the Catch 22 of karma and not being pleasing their spiritual master who could care less about their problems. He can't get help from a qualified therapist because he has been brainwashed from birth that psychology and the sciences are nonsense. He also can't trust anyone who is not a member of the group. It's okay to trust a politician with your marital problems or gender issues (e.g., Mike and Carol Gabbard), but not someone who went to college and got a degree in counseling! Thanks be to some of the non-cult parents and grandparents who have helped a few of the kids get real help.

Butler may have dressed his organization up differently and managed it better than ACB (regarding scandal and financial management). But kids are still growing up to be slaves to a perverse fraud. They are still raised with a philosophy that will haunt them the rest of their lives and deprive them of becoming all that they could be. Most of the children pictured in the Ponomauloa photograph are from broken homes due to the cult.

Just to be clear, these links are to demonstrate the political trends that are eroding both our freedom of speech, as well as making distinctions between ["legitimate", "traditional", "authentic"] or harmless religious practices versus cult practices. We are entering a new era where if it is not legal to insult Islam, that it will set a precedent for any cult. While smudging the lines of religious freedom, which allows cults to operate freely, free speech gets impeded. Dangerous and barbaric practices could well become legal on religious grounds. Social pressure seems to be the only effective means of diverting people away from cults. My point is that it could get worse. If one has consumed foot bath water or guru toe nail clippings, one has crossed a huge boundary marker.
Disgust is hard wired into our nervous system. Its of the utmost importance in assisting us to maintain boundaries.

Disgust is hard wired into our nervous system. Its of the utmost importance in assisting us to maintain boundaries.
Tamper with someone's disgust by persuading them that consuming toenail clippings is a honor and blessing, and that person's boundaries will be disrupted in all kinds of ways.
And imagine the price of waking up and changing one's mind. One has to live with the horrifying realization that one was persuaded to consume vile products of the guru's body. One would likely feel horror and disgust, not only towards those who conned us, but also would feel horrifying self disgust as well.

This is an important point. It should be included in the criteria for identifying a dangerous cult.
The older exers I know did not eat toe nails or drink foot water, but they did fight over leftover food off of the guru's plate. Eating spit is bad enough... The rationale could be anything. In this case, "prasadam" was supposed to have purifying powers and was a holy sacrament. It was supposed to help one advance spiritually.
Taking that lack of logic further to the "nth" degree is how innocent chidren were killed in Nazi Germany... to purify the Aryan race...that Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Communists, "mental and physical defectives" were vermin. It didn't go from 0 to 60 in a second. It took a long time to change Germany from the land of Goethe, Bach, Beethoven, and Schiller to that of Hitler.
Once one line of disgust is crossed (like eating leftovers) another more disgusting line can be more easily crossed to foot bath water mixed with honey and rosewater and yogurt...to powdered toenails in cakes and soups! What next!?
