This may be of help.

Thanks for the link.
What follows is a response to the letter Butler sent about getting some of his followers initiated. Bill and Barbara Penaroza. (the letter misspells their name). Butler was acting like a normal sanyassi or temple president or senior disciple who vets seekers on the path. He rarely recommended initiation. This couple were married prior to joining Siddha at Koolau, Kauai. Their first child Bhakti was born there. Bill did a lot of art and publication work and Barbara was a cook and housewife. The marriage broke up after the pressures of running a newspaper and running for office on Kauai. Bill just got burnt out on the cult stuff and wanted a normal life. People who knew him said he was one of the nicest and most tolerant guy. He was a real "local boy" in Hawaii. He too became a persona non grata. Butler told all his followers to no longer talk to him, but his wife and kids stayed on in the cult with his daughter now working for Tulsi Gabbard.

Letter to Siddha Svarupananda -- Johannesburg 20 October, 1975:
I am in due receipt of your letter dated Sept. 25 with enclosed Guru-daksina and I thank you very much. I am pleased to accept your recommendation for the first initiation of William and Barbara Renaroza. Their names are Sakari das and Sivadasi respectively. Now hold a fire-yajna for their initiation and request them to honor the vow of following the four regulative principles and chanting of minimum 16 rounds japa daily.[/unquote]

Are you referring to Alana Penaroza? She would be Bill's daughter-in-law married to his son Rama who works for Noni Connection. Or are there other Penaroza's on the Tulsi Gabbard payroll?

Looks like the Noni business isnt doing so well these days. Seems they havent done their annual filing with the State of Hawaii. Yet, somehow, their workers were able to make a sizable donation to Tulsi's campaign.

Also of note on this listing is the owners of Noni Connection. Youll see familiar last names.

Thanks again, Vera, for finding proof that Chris Butler arranged for William and Barbara Penaroza to be initiated as Hare Krishnas. Here is the link plus a screen shot:

It will be difficult for all the Penaroza family still in the cult to deny their history. Dudes, it’s on the Internet and written in ink, not pencil. Hopefully, we’ll find similar historical documents of the initiation of Mike and Carol Gabbard.

My news clippings skip forward to the early years of Chris Butler’s political ambition. Bill Penaroza is quoted so I thought it was relevant to the thread. Comments are appreciated as always.

IGG party trying to recruit outside Krishna groups, The Honolulu Advertiser, August 10, 1977

The Independents for Godly Government, a po-
litical party formed in Hawaii last year, an-
nounced yesterday that it has begun to reorganize
in an effort to recruit outside the "Krishna Yoga"
community.
This move was being taken because of "a need
to build a broader base and the desire to obtain
input from leaders and members of the more
organized religious groups," said Bill Penaroza,
State Chairman of the Independents.
He said the party had tried to recruit broadly in
its first campaign in 1976 but that, despite this;
more than half of its candidates "were practition-
ers of Krishna Yoga, though not members of any
temple or church."
Penaroza said a Reorganizational Advisory
Council has been formed consisting of "advisors
from all denominations throughout the state ."
A list of religious and community leaders was
attached to a press release issued by the party.
But, according to Penaroza, over 50 per cent of
the "advisors" asked to remain anonymous.
Moreover, he said that they were not officially
members of the party's steering committee.
The Council is also expected to help the party
select candidates, who would get the backing of
the party.
"We plan to work across all party lines," said
John Moore, Oahu County chairman.
"Though we will still run candidates as Inde-
pendents for Godly Government, more of our ef-
fort will go into selecting and backing qualified
candidates of other parties than previously."

There is a William Penaroza, who is 63 years old and lives in Ewa Beach on Oahu.
I wonder if he is truly “persona non grata” with Chris Butler. If he is, then he should send me a private message about CB's political ambition and agenda plus the cult's involvement in the Gabbard elections. Hall of fame or hall of shame, Bill?

ISKCON keeps records of all initiations. It should not be difficult to get evidence if they were initiated by ACB. Other than that you have the transcripts of meetings with Butler directly addressing Mike. You also have evidence of his wife being on the board of SIF or similar. Not hard to connect the dots.

Heftel Says Smear Campaign Cost Him Hawaii Gubernatorial Primary

The so-called “Heftel Smear,” a totslly separate, anonymous mail-out on the eve of the 1986 Democratic primary, alleging sexual misconduct by Heftel, deserves a close examination by students of Hawaii politics. I suspect it has not received such scrutiny in recent years for two reasons. First, the subject matter is distasteful. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it is more useful to rumors of the Smear as a weapon against the so-called “Democratic Machine,” than to follow the actual evidence. The best evidence, as reported at the time by both papers, lead back to a xerox machine in Charles Marsland’s office, his Executive Assistant at the time, Rick Reed and the Chris Butler Hare Krishna group. I spelled this out in more depth on Dave Shapiro’ blog in 2006:

Reed follows Butler orders and why Carter left cult

BUTLER ALLEGEDLY HELPED TO PROMOTE AND DIRECT THE SMEAR CAMPAIGNS AGAINST BOTH HEFTEL AND INOYUE;[forum.culteducation.com]

Quote:
According to the legend, Cec Heftel was mounting a serious challenge to John Waihee for the Democratic nomination for Governor. Heftel was ahead in the polls, when the Democratic machine, which backed Waihee, launched a "smear campaign" with a mass mailing that alleged Heftel's involvement with drug parties and underaged males. These rumors caused Heftel to lose the election.
The problem with this story is that most of its "facts" are plain wrong. Very few people ever heard about the "smear" until Heftel publicly denounced it right after he lost the election. The mailing had gone out to a very small group of influential people in the apparent hope that they would use their positions to publicize it further. None of them did so.

The best evidence as to who did the mailing points to the politically active, but secretive religious cult headed by Chris Butler, aka Jaggad Guru The most prominent public member at the time was Rick Reed, special assistant to prosecutor Charles Marsland. The FBI determined that photocopies of the document had been made in Marsland's office and a copy of the confidential informant's allegations was found in Reed's personal files, though he had no legal right to have the document. Reed's then wife, a co-worker named Carter Phillips Reed, told investigators that she had been present months before the smear became public when Rick Reed had discussed the allegations against Heftel with his guru, Chris Butler. (Butler and Reed both deny the charge.) All this info is available in the Advertiser's morgue. [Carter left both Reed and the cult after this incident. Carter was villified and all of Butler's followers were told she was a demon and to not talk or associate with her. If they did so, they would risk spiritual deportation into the hellish planets. There were other exers who were present at those meetings who have stated that Buter was behind the mailings. Obviously they fear to come forward publicly. Carter was a good person and did the right thing. She got out of the cult.]

Why would Reed do such a thing? Let's look at two somewhat similar cases. As Marsland's assistant, Rick Reed got access to confidential investigative documents that alleged that Big Island rancher Larry Mehau was a major figure in organized crime. Rick felt a responsibility to warn the public and so he publicized the information in a public speech and in print, calling Mehau the "godfather of organzied crime." This resulted in a major lawsuit against Reed.

In a second case, Reed heard that a hairdresser who worked downtown was telling people that she had been sexually assaulted decades earlier by Senator Inouye. Reed provided a tape recorder to a campaign worker, another member of the cult who had lived in Butler's compound in California, but had come to Hawaii to work on Reed's political campaign. This woman, Umeko Walker, befriended the hairdresser and got her to repeat the story to her while secretly recording the woman's voice. Reed then used the woman's voice without her permission in a campaign ad attacking Inouye.

You are an amazing detective, Privateye! Here is a list from that Hare Krishna database where the location of the initiation was Hawaii. I assume Butler followers could have been initiated elsewhere. And, of course, the database does not address those who Butler initiated personally. Butler’s association with ISKON was very brief, so this is just the tip of the iceberg. Please let me know if any of these names have significance. Thx - Flash
