From the Daily Mail article:

"And then they make a big thing about being part of the family."

That's a theme we see in many cults. The members are treated like children in a group dominated by one or more all-knowing adults. Because we all were children once, we all easily fit ourselves into such a situation. It feels familiar and safe. But it's not safe at all. It's completely toxic for adults to be in a milieu where their lives are micromanaged by others, especially when those others are puffed up with pride in their own rightness.

"It is advertised on social media as a 'home away from home'."

"Students living in Ashwell are promised a 'new' family in a city where they know no one."

Yup. There's the hook.
