While ayurveda, homeopathy, and other local forms of traditional medicine have been practiced in India for centuries, they got a boost with the 2014 election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. The new government elevated the department of Ayush -- an acronym for ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy -- to a central government ministry.
When I was at university I took a survey course on Hinduism and learned about this politicized Hinduism. The Wikipedia article [
en.wikipedia.org] traces it back to 1922, although I learned that it originated earlier as a response to nineteenth-century British imperialism. Even Modern Postural Yoga (MPY) was an assertion of Indian pride in the face of Western cultural domination. The safety of herbal remedies is therefore not simply a scientific issue, as it would be in the West. The doctor's investigations are seen as an injury to national self-esteem.
