Losing my religion

I was appalled but not surprised to read in your paper that
the Mormon church had saddled up to the Catholic church
and helped to fund the support of “prop 8” in California.

I joined the Mormon church when I was 19, receiving
both priesthoods and their sacred (secret) temple ceremony,
until I came out as a gay man at 30.

Needless to say they were vile to me then and the horror
stories I have personally heard from LGBT Mormons all
over the world are truly wicked.

The demonstrators outside the LA temple this past week
will probably be unaware of the workings of what is going
on inside. I received my temple endowments at the Salt
Lake City Temple and I could never describe how awful
it was to be stripped naked, dressed in a bizarre chastity
garment having had various parts of my body “blessed” by
a temple worker. (He was no Brad Pitt, trust me!)

Both the Book of Mormon and the doctrine and covenants
refer to the Catholic church as “the great whore of
the earth” and of course it is typical of the Catholics with
their desperate homophobia to turn a blind eye to this
little indiscretion!

The Mormon church sites “chastity and morality” as
their basis for condemnation of homosexuality, but the
early church practised polygamy, Joseph Smith and
Brigham Young (the second Mormon prophet) are estimated
at having over 50 wives apiece.

Of course it’s not just our community that they have
hated, Mormon philosophy decries that all humans lived
with God in a premortal existance and those that were
the lowest in that existence were born with “a black skin!”

How charming!

Blacks couldn’t serve in the priesthood. On 4 June 1978
the then living prophet Spencer W Kimball had a convenient
revelation from God to overturn this rule. Of course
this had happened before with polygamy. With black
people it was the massive weight of pressure from the
civil rights groups which brought about this change, with
polygamy it was the only way Utah could become part of
the union, God can be quite fickle!

Mormonism is a wicked cult. It uses mind-bending
techniques and as with all religion is fuelled by fear. I am
so glad to be free of it!

It makes me feel physically sick that these bunch of
hypocrites have succeeded in stopping gay people from
having civil partnerships in California, my father always
says that “the truth will out” and I would encourage your
readers to stand firmly against them and their hatred of
free thought and human rights!
