An acquaintance of mine just returned from visiting "John of God," a Brazilian faith healer. Upon his return, he believed that his mind was being taken over by John of God, and he killed himself to keep the invasion from happening. As you can imagine, it was unexpected, as my friend was not depressed, but was a warm, loving person. In retrospect, however, my friend clearly some serious issues...

John of God was only a tipping point, not necessarily the root cause. My Google searches seem to turn up James Randi's debunking of John of God, and lots of people who swear by his authenticity. But I'm curious to know if anyone else has any direct experience with John of God and his effect on emotionally fragile people.
