I know Dov Shurin, another outreach person, from the old 8th St. Shul which is now defunct. His operation is small but he has a lot of presence because he's a musician with a load of recordings out.
Dov is a grandson of the late Rabbi Yaakov Kaminetsky who was a contemporary and basically a peer of the late Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. R. Feinstein was considered the greatest exponent of
Talmud in the post WWII era and Rabbi Kaminetsky was also what is referred to as a "gadol hador" or a "Torah giant in a generation".
Dov told me "... I get all these kids in with their nose rings..."
So you have to understand that he has no respect for the American culture at this point in time, doesn't understand it.
Dov, like many people in outreach, was in touch with Shlomo Carlebach. But he derides Shlomo for his, well, unusual personality. But Dov is much less tolerant when it comes to people who don't accept his message of religous salvation and "duty".
