Blanton says, "We are a cult. And we plan to take over the world."

Yes, Virginia; there really is a new cult leader in the cult self-help/EST/Psycobabble industy. (and I mean "Virginia"...Blanton just ran and lost for the Dems VA 7th district.)

For those of us in the Shenandoah area of Virginia, this guy is not only a paria cultist, but a blight upon the unbelievably inept Democratic Party who has incredulously, embraced him. (FYI: I am a Democrat)

The problem with honesty and truth is that we all have our so-called "world view". If a person is trying to get us to "out" ourselves by being honest, s/he will only understand the truth if it comes out as s/he wishes to hear it; particularly if this person is in a leadership position and puts the a victim on the spot. It is the kind of incideous behavior people who have dishonestly arisen to these places of power, use to subdue those they have coersed to follow them.

----------------------------------

Brad Blanton's eight-day “Course in Honesty” workshops - a $2,400-per-person seminar in which participants “tell the truth to each other.” involves requiring nudity each participant who gives a capsulized blow by blow of their personal sexual history in front of the group and videotaped. It is directly based upon his (self-touted) "best-selling" book "Radical Honesty". Many of the tactics he uses in his seminars are almost a direct steal of the old EST advanced training requirements. Indeed, Blanton was a major EST practitioner, (and if the Landmark folks find out that he's doing this, he might get sued for "coersive tactics infringement" C'mon, laugh! It was a joke).

His approach is directly influenced By Werner Erhardt as well as Gestalt Therapy. His personality is, as one supporter labels him, "a redneck therapist". He fancies himself a new age radical alternative to Dr. Phil, (however, he'd likely not admit this.)

His beliefs certainly are radical...however, the "Truth" is more or less in his interpretation of it. A list of his beliefs:

- He is part of an informal extremist environmental doom-and-gloom group that believes there will be die-off of the human species within the next century. No, not just a couple of million innocents from war, climate, famine and pestulance, but the vast majority of the human race in a brief cataclismic "Steven King"-like catastrophe.

statement from a fellow skeptic: "There's a guy named Brad Blanton who teaches Gestalt therapists and other people about radical honesty, and he says that the key to enlightenment is the mantra, "Duuuuhhhhh." Money-back guarantee, he assures, just recite this mantra for half an hour and you will become Buddha."

- From his own book and site: "They plan to build, in the real world, a substitute government that will be both more compassionate and efficient than the way the current world order is set up. Blanton says, 'We are a cult. And we plan to take over the world.'" [www.radicalhonesty.com]

need I say more? Sure, here's more:

- Blanton skilfully keeps himself from being labeled a "cult" by deflecting cultism to other (usually proven) theraputic modalities such as cognitive therapy, government misdeeds and other proven "dishonest" business and religious enterprises. I believe the DSM4 refers to such a behavior as "transference". He loves to give "no BS" advice on how to be honest. To me, its like asking someone to "trust me" in solitciting $2500 for a seminar...

-Here is the Wiki on Mr. Blanton: "Dr. Brad Blanton (born September 4, 1940) is an author, seminar leader, and candidate for United States House of Representatives in 2006. Dr. Blanton is running as an Independent against incumbent Eric Cantor in Virginia's Seventh Congressional District.

His first book, Radical Honesty: How To Transform Your Life By Telling The Truth, became a nation-wide best seller in 1996 and has been translated into seven languages. [Untrue: it has never been on any best seller list except for his own, as he has written several books.] That success was followed by books that applied the principles of Radical Honesty to personal growth, social transformation and parenting.

Dr. Blanton earned his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966 when he was 25 years old. He spent 25 years in the private practice of psychotherapy, becoming the Director of The Center for Well Being in Washington, D.C., where he worked with individuals, couples, and groups. He also served as a consultant to corporations, government and the media. In 1990 he moved to central Virginia and founded Radical Honesty Enterprises, a private corporation dedicated to promoting honesty in the world.

Politically active from his days in the civil rights movement to the present, Dr. Blanton ran as an Independent against Eric Cantor in 2004 election for the United States Congress in Virginia's Seventh Congressional District. In that race, he earned 24% of the vote.

Brad Blanton now lives in Stanley, Virginia, where he spends his time writing and preparing for his campaign for Congress in 2006." [Note: he lost his bid last week.]
